Back to New Orleans

We’re on the way to New Orleans again! This is going to be a quick trip to pick up our new puppy. Read more
  • Craps

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Craps is a casino game that I’ve never understood at all. Once, one of the casino workers running the craps table explained how the game is played but I still didn’t get it. He was very patient and went over everything slowly and throughly but I was still confused. It’s a very popular and lively game but it’s just not for me.Read more

  • Walking the Floor

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Harrah’s New Orleans is so empty compared to the Harrah’s, and other casinos, in Las Vegas. Admittedly it’s still kind of early, but the places in Vegas are crowded 24-7. All the open space here is a nice change of pace.Read more

  • Evil Jester

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

I know that this jester figure is meant to look festive and impart the flavor of New Orleans but there’s something about this jester that looks very evil. I think it’s the grin and eyebrows. This guy looks better suited to a horror movie than a casino!Read more

  • Chinese Dragon

    November 8, 2022 ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

This dragon doesn’t really seem to fit in with the rest of the decor in the casino but it certainly does look festive. I’m glad that they knew to go with red, a lucky color, for the dragon.

  • Trumpet

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌩️ 84 °F

When we left Harrah’s, we used their back entrance and saw this sculpture as we stepped outside. It’s an abstract and stylized trumpet. It’s a good choice for public art since trumpets feature so prominently in the New Orleans Jazz music.Read more

  • Riverwalk

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Just across the street from Harrah’s is Riverwalk. This is basically just an outlet mall with a food court. It’s a bit early for lunch right now but a snack would be nice. Let’s go see what’s available.Read more

  • Snack Time!

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Our first stop at Riverwalk was Cafe du Monde. We found that the beignets here are actually better than the ones served at the original, more popular, location.

  • So Thirsty!

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

One thing I really like about this branch of Cafe du Monde, which the main branch doesn’t have, is unlimited access to free ice water. In a city as hot as New Orleans, I would think that cold water is available everywhere but, unfortunately, it’s not.Read more

  • Good Stuff!

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

Everyone loves beignets! Each serving consists of three beignets covered in powered sugar. Three is enough for Kathy and I to share but I certainly wouldn’t object to another serving!

  • Still Tasty

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

No matter what we think of the beignets, Groot still loves them. He’ll eat pretty much anything though. It’s not really that they taste bad, they just taste different from what we experienced on our last visit.Read more

  • Cafe DuMonde

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

I think that we prefer this location of Cafe DuMonde over the original one in the French Quarter. Yes, the other one feels more authentic, but this one is not as crowded and, being indoors, we don’t have to deal with the heat or humidity of the New Orleans afternoons.Read more

  • From Farm to Table

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

As we were leaving Riverwalk shopping center, I saw this sign hanging in one of the windows of a candy shop. I like candy corn, in limited amounts, and found this sign to be very clever and imaginative. I was even considering going into the store and picking up a bit of candy corn but, feeling full from the beignets, decided to pass.Read more

  • Waiting

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

We decided to go see the French Market and, rather than use a taxi, we’re going to take one of the trolley cars. I always enjoy riding the trolleys while we’re in New Orleans. It’s such a unique type of transportation!Read more

  • Where’s the Trolly?

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

I’m hoping that we won’t have to wait much longer for the streetcar to come. We’ve got some shade to stand under but the temperature is still so warm. If it’s this warm now, I’m really happy that we didn’t come here in the summer season!Read more

  • All Aboard!

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

It didn’t take all that long for the streetcar to come but it felt longer because we were waiting. We’re now on our way to the French Market. I really enjoy riding these streetcars around New Orleans. I wish we had these in New York City.Read more

  • French Market

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

Similar to some European markets, this historically charming open-air market features shopping, dining, music and local tradition that is uniquely New Orleans. From Cafe du Monde near Jackson Square to the flea market at the end of Esplanade Avenue, the French Market includes five blocks of local produce, specialty art, handmade crafts, retail shopping and more.Read more

  • Corn on the Cob

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

The first thing we did, when we got to the French Market, was to get an ear of roasted Cajun corn. The corn is made with a selection of spices and seasonings that give it such a delicious flavor. It’s such a great snack!Read more

  • Mardi Gras Masks

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ 🌩️ 84 °F

Souvenirs of New Orleans, like these masks, are primarily what is sold at the French Market. For whatever reason, the sellers are all very grouchy about cameras and won’t allow any photos to be taken, even if you buy something from them. If you have a strong enough zoom lens, you can still get good photos without incurring their wrath.Read more

  • Shucking Oysters

    November 8, 2022 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

Shucking Oysters looks like a difficult and time consuming job. I would imagine it’s kind of dangerous too. If they slip with the knife they use to pry the shells open, it could cause some nasty cuts.
