    Ready to Go

    21. januar 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ ☁️ 41 °F

I've got the car all packed up and I'm ready to go! Chewbacca is sitting right beside me and he'll be my co-pilot on this drive up to Niagara Falls and then picking up Veronica from school on the way back.
Chewbacca is actually a very cool backpack that I got at New York Comic Con a while ago. I've been wanting one of these as soon as I saw it but they've always been quite expensive. When I found this at Comic Con, brand new and sealed in the bag, for only $20, I knew I had to get it. Chewie's been with me on nearly all my travels ever since.
This drive to Niagara Falls is going to be a quick trip but I'm looking forward to a lot of fun. Let's get going...

  • Breakfast Stop

    21. januar 2017, Forenede Stater ⋅ 🌫 37 °F

I just finished the first leg of my trip up north to get Veronica from her school in Geneseo. Right now, I'm in the Poconos, in McDonald's, having breakfast.
Rather than just going to pick Veronica up and come straight home, I'm going to go a bit further north and see Niagara Falls. The Falls are always a great place to visit and, since Veronica is leaving Geneseo to transfer SUNY Farmingdale, I'm not sure when I'll have a chance to visit Niagara Falls again.
It's been a very good drive so far, with no traffic at all. The weather here is so foggy though. I think the Poconos are always like that though. Hopefully, once I get out of the mountains, the weather will become clearer.
Breakfast is done, and I'm ready to hit the trail again. I was a bit hesitant to eat at this McDonald's since it didn't get very good reviews on Yelp but it was actually fine. The food was typical McDonald's, the place was clean, and the service was both quick and polite. What's not to like?

  • On the Border

    21. januar 2017, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

I made it! The rest of the ride to Canada was uneventful and quick. The Honda Pilot drove very smooth but it ate gas like crazy! I could never afford a car like that. I'd go broke putting gas in it all the time!
Getting past the border crossings was an experience like I've never had before. Every time I visit Canada, the guards on both sides are very nice and friendly but this time the Canadian border guard was not very nice at all. He asked so many questions, some that didn't even seem relevant to me, and even came out of his booth to walk all around the car and look through all the windows. He asked me why I'm coming into Canada, what my job is, and if I was bringing any alcohol or firearms. When I said no, he asked if I owned any firearms. When I said no to that, he asked if I wanted to own firearms. I thought that was a strange, and inappropriate, and wondered where he was going with this and why. I just responded that I've never thought about it and did it matter? The next thing he asked was how much, and what kind, of photography gear am I bringing into Canada. I guess he saw my camera bag on the back seat when he was walking around the car. I have no idea why he was asking about that though. There are no rules about limits on photography equipment that I've ever heard of. I told him I have just one camera body, several lenses and a tripod. His next question was how was I planning to use it. This keeps getting more and more disturbing to me but I just answered that I planned to see, and photograph, Niagara Falls and then leave tomorrow morning.
He appeared to be thinking things over, I'm not sure why. Maybe thinking of more questions or maybe thinking of not letting me into the country but, finally he gave me back my passport, after going through every page, and told me I could go.
That entire incident was very weird and disturbing. I've always loved visiting Canada before but that guy really made me reconsider my feelings about it. Dealing with him just left a very sour taste for Canada in my mouth. I'm not sure how fast I'd be willing to come back again. That's sad because, before today, I've always considered it to be a beautiful place and thought the Canadian people were very nice and friendly. I guess not all of them are like that, unfortunately.
The bad part is, those border guards are the first contact someone has with the people of another country and it's also a person's first experience with that country. If it's not a positive experience, it really shapes your opinion and feeling about that place. I know it's made my opinion of Canada drop quite a bit. That makes me sad because I've always loved to go there before.

  • The Fog

    21. januar 2017, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

My quick getaway to Niagara Falls turned out to be a complete bust! I didn't even get to see the falls since the entire area was shrouded in this heavy fog.
I was able to hear the water falling, and feel the water mist in the air but this was all I could see. How disappointing! Hopefully I'll get better weather on my next trip.Læs mere

  • Where are the Falls?

    21. januar 2017, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

In what I had hoped would be my best visit to Niagara Falls has turned out to be my worst. It started off with that surly border guard and just kept going downhill from there.
This entries photo shows what I saw and how limited the view was. I walked from Clifton Hill all the way over to the Horseshoe Falls, hoping that the fog might thin out but, if anything, it just kept getting worse.Læs mere

  • Shut Down

    21. januar 2017, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 50 °F

I knew that January is not the height of the tourist season for Niagara Falls but I expected to see at least a few places still open. The Clifton Hill area looked to be mostly open but everything right near the Falls was closed down. I don't think that any of these places will be open again until the Spring.Læs mere

  • Skylon Tower

    21. januar 2017, Canada ⋅ ⛅ 48 °F

Skyline Tower can hardly be seen because of all the fog. There's a rotating restaurant up there, as well as the usual selection of gift shops and souvenir stands. I was planning on going to the top of Skylon Tower on this trip to get some good arial shots of the Falls. The fog ruined that idea though.Læs mere

  • Darkness Falls

    21. januar 2017, Canada ⋅ 🌫 46 °F

The longer I was out, the worse the fog seemed to get. It kept getting colder too. All I was wearing was my Northface jacket and I was really starting to feel the cold. The dampness from the fog and the falls wasn't helping either. As I was taking pictures, I felt myself losing the feeling in my fingers. I've got to go back to the hotel and get my heavy coat. I'm glad that I thought to bring it!Læs mere

  • Tis the Season

    21. januar 2017, Canada ⋅ 🌫 45 °F

One thing that I thought was strange was seeing all of the areas Christmas decorations still up. It looked nice, especially with all the fog, but I was just surprised to see Christmas decorations so late in January. I wonder if that's typical of Canada or if they are just very late taking it all down.Læs mere

  • The Rainforest Cafe

    21. januar 2017, Canada ⋅ 🌫 43 °F

I love Rainforest Cafe but hardly ever eat there because there aren't any close to us. This is another of those vacation restaurants for us. I wanted to eat at the Rainforest Cafe while I was in Niagara Falls but didn't really want to have a full restaurant experience all by myself. I've been to diners and fast food places ony own but I couldn't see myself sitting down in someplace like this by myself.Læs mere
