  • All Aboard!

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

I was surprised to see that the RER train that pulled in was a double decker style train. When we rode the RER from the airport into Paris, it was just a single level train. I guess that different lines use different trains based upon the amount of commuters it needs to carry. I've seen that many of the Long Island Rail Road trains are double decker ones now. So far, I've never been on one of those yet.Læs mere

  • On the RER

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

This is what it looks like inside the double decker style train. Since we weren't going to be riding very far on the RER, we stayed on the first level. We didn't want to miss our stop because it took us too long of a time getting down the steps.Læs mere

  • We're Here!

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

We're at our stop already. Traveling by train is very popular throughout Europe because it's easy, fast and efficient. I'm really enjoying riding trains everywhere. We have lots of trains in the US, but they don't seem to be as well run, or clean, as what they have in Europe. I wish that our trains were like what they have here!Læs mere

  • Musee d'Orsay

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

Our stop on the RER let us out right by another very famous museum, the Musee d'Orsay. I really hope that we get to visit this museum but I'm doubting that we will. Kathy is not a fan of museums and doesn't really enjoy visiting them. It's really a shame because there are so many beautiful works of art to see in these places.Læs mere

  • The Clock

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 46 °F

This clock is, to me, one of the biggest attractions of Musee d'Orsay. I've seen photos from inside the museum looking out over the Seine through the clock. I was hoping to get that shot but, since we're just walking right past Musee d'Orsay, I guess it's not going to happen. Maybe on our next visit to Paris, I hope.Læs mere

  • Which Bank is This?

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 45 °F

Tourists are often confused about the terms "right bank" and "left bank" and will spend hours on the street corners of Paris with crumpled maps trying to orient themselves and figure out which side of the riverbank they are standing on. The system is very simple and was devised because the Seine's curvy nature often does make orientation difficult.
The trick is to remember when you face DOWNRIVER the left bank is on your left and the right bank is on your right. If you can't tell left from right at this point you shouldn't be traveling alone. If you can't figure out which way the water is flowing (don't look at the boats, they go upstream too!) drop a potato chip or look for some debris and see which way it's floating. Once you're sure of your directions, you'll be able to make it to the Café Les Deux Magots on time, and not end up at La Defense instead.

  • No Swimming

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 45 °F

Alluring as the Seine River is, it's hardly fit for a swim — there's a reason why the man-made Paris Plage (Paris Beach) is a purely cosmetic shore. But for those of you who demand a dip in central Paris, you can swim on the river. The Piscine Josephine Baker is a glass-walled swimming pool built on a barge that is permanently moored just below the Bastille. We didn't get to see that ship but it sounds amazing! I'm sure it would have been closed for the season even if we did go to see it. It's much to chilly for swimming in Paris right now!Læs mere

  • Crossing the Seine

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 45 °F

Paris is such a beautiful city! I have to admit, I was expecting it to be very similar to London since both cities are located in Europe, but they are so different. Neither one is better, they are just different. I'm so lucky and thankful that I've been able to see both of these wonderful places.Læs mere

  • We're Almost There

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ ⛅ 43 °F

We've almost made it to the Louvre! We're even starting to get glimpses of it through the trees. I'm surprised by how big the Louvre Museum is and how much land it seems to take up. We're really eager to make it to the courtyard with the big glass pyramids. That's when we'll know that we're really at the Louvre! It won't be much longer!Læs mere

  • About the Louvre

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 41 °F

The Louvre is the biggest museum in the world. It is so big that it is humanely impossible to see all the museum has to offer in one visit. How long would it take you? Well, if you ever have 100 days to spare, you could probably squeeze in every piece of art, but you could only spend 30 seconds on each piece – and that’s if you were there all day, every day. The museum offers 380,000 pieces in total – but not all of collection is exhibited to the public.Læs mere

  • No Lines

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 41 °F

There's no lines right now because the Louvre is closed but I've heard that, when it's open, these lines are horrific. Many people will pay premium prices to have a "skip the line" option with their ticket. That's crazy but it's probably better than spending all day waiting on a very long line.Læs mere

  • At the Drive In

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 41 °F

I can't believe that they turned the Louvre into, what looks like, a drive in movie theater. It really looks awful like this! This giant screen just ruins the look of the entire courtyard. Apparently, it's purpose is to screen videos celebrating the museum's new branch that opened up in Saudi Arabia.Læs mere

  • Studying the Map

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 41 °F

Since the Louvre was closed, there wasn't much more for us to do around here right now. Kathy was looking at the Metro map on her phone, deciding on the best route to get us back to our hotel. It's getting close to dinner time and, with all the walking around we've been doing, we're really hungry!Læs mere

  • Time to Go!

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 41 °F

While Kathy was checking the Metro map, we were sitting right under this statue. Like the statue depicts, it's also time for us to go trotting off. It's time for us to start deciding on what we want for dinner. I'm starved! I hope that the trains won't be too crowded.Læs mere

  • Enjoying the Ride

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 37 °F

Even though the train station was not very crowded, the train wasn't empty enough for me to get a seat. Kathy got a seat and she offered it to me but I've course I wouldn't take it. I would much rather that she be able to sit down rather then me. It's not that far of a ride anyway. I don't mind standing.Læs mere

  • At Grands Boulevards

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 37 °F

When we got off the train, at Grands Boulevards, we were surprised by how empty the train station was. Doesn't anyone here go to work? Doesn't Paris have it's own rush hour? I thought that every city has its own version of this. Maybe, over here, it's earlier or perhaps later than what we have in New York.Læs mere

  • Dinner at the Hard Rock

    7. november 2017, Frankrig ⋅ 🌙 37 °F

We were craving some simple American food tonight so we went to the Hard Rock Cafe, which is only about a block away from our hotel. Kathy was getting a bit frustrated while we were there because Judy kept sending her messages asking how to use the T-Mobile Tuesdays app because she wanted to get a free meal with it but didn't know how. Kathy had to end up ordering the meal for her. Cell phones let you do amazing things now. We're here in Paris yet we're ordering a take out meal at a Chinese restaurant in New York. That would be very cool if Kathy didn't have to interrupt her dinner to spend so much time on that project.Læs mere
