    September 16, 2025 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Overnight stop in Brussels. Just managed a very quick wander around and ready for sleep already. But it looks nice here.

  • Leaving Brussels

    September 17, 2025 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Left Brussels just after nine. For three trains that all went smoothly. One left late but got to the next station only a few minutes late and still in plenty of time for my connection.

  • Arrived in Strasbourg

    September 17, 2025 in France ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Well, it sure is beautiful! I am going to go explore lots more tomorrow. Just popped out to get some supplies. And may have stood in awe for a bit staring at the canals.

Oh, and, of course, I have to get a pic of any cats I meet on my travels!

The wifi in the apartment is not working. It connects but has no internet and tells me I should reboot the router. But there is no router to be seen. And the host is not responding. So I am using mobile data, and hopefully, she will answer tomorrow.

  • Some snaps from Mulhouse

    September 19, 2025 in France ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I bought a book and some exercise books in FNAC, as well as a replacement charging brick, because mine had decoded it would stop working and my phone would die before getting back to the flat.

I felt slightly better about it, as they only had cute ones available.

I also went into a bloomin McDonald's because I was hoping they would have charging points, as many McDonald's do, but sadly no. (Befpre biying the chargee, of course.) I just got fries and an iced coffee.

I am going to pop round the corner and see if I can get a tarte flambée for my dinner in a mo, and then I will try for a super cheap weekend of free museums and cooking for myself with what I have already and maybe a courgette and onion, too.

    Probably.

  • Un soir au bord de l'eau

    September 19, 2025 in France ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Two tartes flambées - one 'Vegetarienne' and one 'Aux Pommes'.

The first was actually really nice, even though I suspect some of the vegetables were from a jar or tin. (If I have another, I will go for a more traditional, and accidentally vegetarian, one, such as the chevre or roquefort (and, yes, I do realise that the cheese may well not count as properly vegetarian). The second was bloomin gorgeous. And was drenched in calvados and set alight - sadly, I did not get my camera out on time. I had a kir cremant cassis and a Grimwalden beer with it. The kir lasted through to dessert as they brought the main course out very quickly (another clue in the 'vegetables probably from a jar or tin' mystery.

Tatte flambée is a kind of cross between a crêpe and a pizza and I officially love them. No way could I have eaten a whole pizza and then a whole dessert pizza and would would have felt VERY full after a savoury and then a dessert crêpe. But this was just right. Said Goldilocks.

And then I topped the evening off with a stroll along the river, and I feel like I now need to do that every night, because it was so beautiful and soothing. The lights and buildings reflecting in the water is just so magical.

  • Wandering Strasbourg

    September 20, 2025 in France ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Saturday was another hot day, and I should really have gone out early in the morning. But I left it until late morning and walked along the river down to the Palais Rohan, which has a bunch of different museums within (see next footprint).

After that, I just went on a general wander, heading down little streets or streets with interesting looking buildings. I also had an ice cream.

While meandering along, taking the odd photo of a big door (I am obsessed with big doors, or just doors in general) I thought it would be funny if I ended up back where I am staying without even realising I had been walking that way. A few moments later, I spotted a supermarket, and I needed a few bits and pieces. But I thought it would be silly to end up laden down if I were really far from the flat. I was about to check the maps app, when I thought the supermarket looked really familiar. I swivelled round and saw the Droguerie du Cygne and realised that I had, in fact, got back to the supermarket round the corner without even realising it.

I bought a few vegetables and weighed and ticketed them (the number of times I have forgotten to do thag in France!) and some sparkling water and pasta and a jar of Mutti sauce. Oh, and a baguette.

Back at the flat, after some bread and cheese and reading for a bit, I ended up having a siesta. Something I seem to do a lot when I am away and barely ever when at home.

Then I cooked and ate some pasta amd spent the rest of the evening drawing on the iPad and watching This Is Us on the laptop. (Still hotspotting, but thanks to some advice from Chris, using less data to do so.)

  • Museums

    September 20, 2025 in France ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Some snaps from the Musée de Beaux Arts and Musée des Art Decoratifs. I didn’t take any photos in the archaeological museum, but it was quite interactive, and in the basement, so slightly cooler than the other two.

I much preferred the modern and contemporary art museum. I am really not a big fan of religious art, which there was a lot, of portraits of nobility – also a lot of. So there are not so many photos from here – mostly flowers and fruit.

I still appreciated getting to go round three museums for free!

  • Lucerne

    September 22, 2025 in Switzerland ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

I really liked Lucerne and it looked like somewhere I might like to stay for a few days.

Incidentally, I spotted a lot of youth or backpacking hostels in Switzerland. More than I have noticed elsewhere. So if you are someone who likes hostelling, it might be a good place to do so.

I just stayed in the flat yesterday, by the way. Heavy rain and really did need a rest day and glad to have made it a full one..

Not sure about tomorrow yet. Will decide in the morning, probably.

  • Two Strasbourg wanders

    September 23, 2025 in France ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Two strolls round Strasbourg today in a very light rain, so didn’t use the umbrella. And got over 12000 steps, so not such a small wander.

I am going to cook in a moment and make some kind of pasta with bits and bobs left in the fridge. Plus some chickpeas that I bought.

And watch the last two episodes of The Girlfriend.

And I will have a beer with dinner and listen to the rain, which has started up again.

And decide where to go tomorrow.

Germany? Dijon? Nancy? Nancy and Dijon? Luxembourg? Metz? Or back to Switzerland, as I still have some Swiss data!

  • Offenburg

    September 24, 2025 in Germany ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Quick hop over to Germany yesterday, though I did not have the energy to stay long or to go further. The buildings were not terribly dissimilar to those in Strasbourg – unsurprisingly really, given Offenburg's only about half an hour away on the train.

I did have the joy of seeing a goat standing imin a table in a field on the way back to Strasbourg. It was too quick for me to get a photo, so I drew it instead.

The rest of the day and evening I just lounged in the appartment, watching This Is Us, with the swathes of data I had left, finishing the food and Cremant d'Alsace from the fridge.

Today, it's time to head home. I am packed, apart from my Morning Ink sketchbook, charging headphones, book, and snack. And I don't have to leave for a couple of hours.

I will draw my Morning Ink and then give the flat a quick sweep and wipe and then sit and read till it's time to go.

Strasbourg has been a nice place to stay and is a good bade for doing some exploring, even if I didn't make the most of that!
