May 10th, 2024 - Saturday - Valle de Travers, CH (Robella)

Thrilled to have conquered Creux du Van by mountain bike once again! It marks my third visit to this incredible natural amphitheater in our ten years of calling Switzerland home – a decade that still feels like it's flown by!
Creux du Van is truly a sight to behold: massive, 160-meter high cliffs cradling a four-kilometer long valley. Formed first by glaciers and then by streams carving through ancient limestone, this dramatic landscape offers a fascinating glimpse into Jurassic geology. The unique regional climate even supports forests alongside arctic-alpine flora, making it a haven for diverse wildlife like chamois and ibex. You can even find a year-round four-degree spring, the Fontaine Froide, nestled within. Interestingly, this area of Val-de-Travers is also known for producing the renowned Swiss absinthe.
This visit, the "mini Grand Canyon" vibes were as strong as ever, a powerful reminder of nature's artistry. We powered our way up on our bikes, and I felt a real sense of accomplishment making it to the top under my own steam for the third (and perhaps final, haha!) time. Next time, the E-MTB will definitely be joining the adventure for a bit more enjoyment on the ascent! The reward? Stunning panoramic views and a lovely encounter with some ibex, their coats hinting at the approaching spring. Our overnight stay near a charming, century-old chapel: Chapelle du Tourillot (built in 1925) provided the perfect peaceful ending to an exhilarating day.

    May 11th, 2024 - Sunday - Vallorbe - Jougne, FR

Our Sunday morning began with a pilgrimage to a proper French boulangerie. Securing two crusty baguettes for lunch (the price difference compared to the US still astounds – over $8 there versus just over €1 here! Vive la France!) was followed by the pure indulgence of pain au chocolat and croissants for breakfast. Sheer bliss!
The afternoon led us to the mountain biking paradise of Métabief. It was fantastic to witness riders of all ages embracing the trails. We even took advantage of our magic pass for a scenic gondola ride up. Theo and I enjoyed an Enduro trail together, and I noticed some intriguing rock formations that echoed the grandeur of Creux du Van. Later, Theo was in his element tackling the downhill tracks, while I happily cruised along the green trail. We even had a lovely impromptu coffee invitation from a fellow MTB enthusiast Theo met. It was a wonderful way to cap off a memorable weekend, surrounded by breathtaking scenery and the warmth of fellow outdoor lovers.
