  • Moura.

    September 3, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We are not stopping for long at most places as they are very small and nowhere to camp. We have reached Moura which is a coal mining town and saw this beautifully painted water tower ! You need to enlarge them to see the Galah clearly. It was difficult to photograph.Read more

  • No hoax!

    August 30, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

We had started calling it the Great Crested Hoax!!
Friends had seen the Great Crested Grebe at Theresa Creek Dam! So we walked for miles around the dam for 3 days, only to see it in the late afternoon of our last day just down from where we were camping!!
    Our patience had been rewarded!

A great place stay. Nadine is a great cook so we had the Sunday roast beef and the following night curry!
I saw a Pale headed parrot which has a red rump!
They have 3 dams and a bore so are drought proof.
Here are some photos from our time there.

  • Elim Beach.

    August 10, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

This place is north of Cook Town. A bush camp by the sea. Run by aboriginal people.
Idyllic with white sands, palm trees and ferns.
The tide goes out a very long way! Luckily, because it is very shallow, the crocodiles are 3 Ks away and are not a problem!!Read more

  • The road to Elim Beach via Cook Town

    August 10, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We had a beautiful drive to Elim Beach. So green and lush. Very tropical! We didn’t stop in CT but filled up with diesel and came straight here from Mt Carbine which is an old mining town site about 250 Ks. Some of it dirt road but relatively well graded!!
We passed a church that had a Spanish look about it!

  • Herberton historic village!

    August 2, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

We visited the village which is beautifully presented and kept. Many blasts from the past! It is interesting to think that we are probably the last generation to remember having seen some of the things as children!
Some of the things we enjoyed seeing!
There is a moustache cup, beautiful children’s clothing, a dolls house, and a fascinating tea pot and cup in a basket!
To keep the tea warm I imagine!!

We took lots of water and some food and on the second day we we went up a treacherous dirt road very cleverly manoeuvred by Gordon and helped by Wally the dog!!

  • O'Brien's Creek.

    July 22, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We went fossicking for Topaz and other semi precious stones. Sadly we didn’t find anything!
It was fun to do. Pick axe and shovel in hand we had a go! Hot work, but under the trees in a dry creek bed!

  • Undarra Lava Tubes.

    July 21, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

We visited the Lava tubes which are190,000 years old. David Attenborough visited them and thought they should be one of the “wonders of the world”! They are the oldest and biggest in the world. 30 metres high and 20 metres wide. Inside one we saw micro bats! Well named!! They really are tiny.
The tubes are surrounded by an oasis of greenery, vines and ancient trees. Away from them there is just very dry Savannah.
    It was an excellent tour!

  • Flat Creek Station!

    July 18, 2018 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We visited Flat Creek but we were disappointed! It was very hot and dusty with little shade! The only Gouldian Finches we saw were in a cage at the homestead! They breed them which is a very good thing since their numbers have dwindled. We did a bit of fossicking but did not strike gold!!
It used to be a large gold mining town.
