    Headwind Kind of Day. I’m going the wrong way, when is it gong to stop

    I woke up tired today, an hour later than planned and my planned breakfast places were closed

    The route out of Novi Sad was mostly good — miles of cycle paths and levees along the Danube — but it was flat, exposed and windy. That damn headwind pressured me all day. Later came some dirt roads and more Serbian traffic, including the now-familiar cars flying past much closer than I’d prefer.

    But there were some good moments. I finally rolled the Koga down to the Danube and dipped a tire in the river for the first time. I also met a young guy and his father-in-law cycling from Vienna to Belgrade. They’d been following EuroVelo 6 for seven days and, annoyingly, told me they’d enjoyed a tailwind most of the way. 😄

    I’d originally planned to keep riding to Sombor, but after about 51 miles I was done. I stopped in the little town of Odžaci, found a fantastic apartment, put my feet up, and decided that Budapest can take three days instead of two.

    The surprise of the day came tonight. My hostess recommended Galerija, a restaurant just around the corner. I sat on the quiet garden patio with a rakija waiting for my take out dinner. Beautiful courtyard, soft music, friendly people — honestly one of the nicest places I’ve sat on this entire trip.

    Some days bicycle touring gives you mountains, monuments and spectacular views. Other days it gives you a headwind, tired legs, a little loneliness — and then, when you least expect it, a perfect little patio in Odža
