    Dinner at the Larson House

    August 5, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Our flight was on Sun Country, which flies out of Terminal 2. This terminal is much smaller and less busy than the main terminal. (This was really nice since we had requested assistance for Jane. Lori was able to push Jane around in the complimentary wheelchair and not run into anybody!)

We flew into Portland, OR. (Flight times, prices, etc. were better than flying into Seattle for this trip.) Oregon was a new state for Lori.

We picked up the rental car and headed north. Washington was a new state for Jane.

We arrived at Sam & Cianna's house at about 8 p.m. We got the grand tour & then enjoyed a yummy dinner Sam made from one of his mom's recipes.

    Visiting Cecil

    August 6, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

After church, Lori and Jane drove south a ways on I-5 to visit Jane's friend, Cecil. The best way to describe Cecil is that she is another Tammy Haag. - she likes to feed people!. Cecil, who has cancer, is basically on a liquid diet. We dined at Cecil's house with her, her husband, and her sister. While Cecil drank her broth, the rest of us enjoyed pork tenderloin, dinner rolls, corn on the cob, watermelon, muskmelon, honey dew, cherries, cheesecake with lemon curd and Huckleberry ice cream. We also took food with us when we left - cinnamon rolls, cake, sea salt caramels, and almond biscotti.Read more

    Sunday in Tacoma

August 6, 2023 in the United States

After church Lori and Jane went to visit Jane's friend Cecil which left Karl, Sam, and Cianna to figure out what to do with their time. We had eggs, bacon, sausage, and biscuits for lunch, and then decided we didn't have time to get up into Seattle.

So we decided on checking out Tacoma.

We navigated to the Washington State History Museum and spent a little over 2 hrs getting acquainted with the history of the region. After that we checked out Anthem Coffee & Tea, and then walked across the Chihuly Bridge of Glass (which led to the Museum of Glass). With an eye on an edible cookie dough shop we drove to Cookie Dough Delight and walked around the Stadium District. Stadium High School is a public school in Tacoma that calls a neat building built by the Northern Pacific Railroad (James J Hill from Minnesota).

We then made dinner plans with Lori and Jane who were on their way back from Cecil's, and eventually met them at The Fish Peddler Restaurant.

Trying to get to The Fish Peddler

    August 6, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

When Lori and Jane were driving back to Lakewood, Karl called, and they arranged to meet in Tacoma at The Fish Peddler at 7 p.m.

Lori and Jane were nearing the area when Jane, who was reading off step-by-step directions on Google maps, hit a wrong button and lost the directions. Lori continued along until she could find a place to pull over and locate the directions. (She ended up pulling over in angle parking that you were supposed to back into.)

Lori and Jane then drove around in circles as the streets they needed to turn on were blocked with orange cones and/or police cars.

Meanwhile, Karl is at the restaurant watching Lori on Life360. He would see that Lori was almost there - she just had to turn down this street ... and then she wouldn't turn.. After this happened several times, he stopped watching Lori on Life360 as he just couldn't handle it.

At one of the streets Lori was supposed to turn on, they pulled over to speak with a man who had a radio. He explained they were having an "event," but they should be done in 5 minutes.

The "event" was the filming of a motorcycle commercial with a production company from Minneapolis. While they were waiting, the man came back to explain if they went back to Pacific Street (which they had already been on several times) and took it up to 24th Street, they would be able to get to the restaurant. (They were at 14th Street at the time.) Lori explained she was tired of driving around in circles and was happy to wait.

The man with the radio ended up calling ahead to say he was sending a white Nissan through. Lori and Jane then proceeded to drive through the production area. When they got to the next section and were stopped to find out where they were trying to get to, Lori showed the man the map. He said, "Follow my butt." He then led them around the man on the motorcycle (who was being critiqued about how he was holding his arm). Lori and Jane then continued down the street, where they waited at the bottom for a police officer to pull her police cruiser forward so they could finally get through to the restaurant.

    The Fish Peddler

    August 6, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

When Lori and Jane finally arrived at the restaurant, they joined Karl, Cianna, and Sam on the patio. We had crab cakes as an appetizer and put our order in. They were out of the seared tuna, so Cianna changed her order to the Mahi Mahi tacos.

The weather was beautiful. We had been talking for some time when our waitress came around and said our food would be coming in 5 minutes. Some time after that, the manager came out and said, "I am so sorry, but we are training in a new cook, and your ticket got lost. We will comp your meal as you shouldn't have had to wait for an hour." We had been having so much fun, we hadn't realized it had been an hour!

At the end of our meal, the waitress brought out the bill. After Karl looked at it, he explained to the waitress that the manager had said our meal would be comped. The waitress went back inside and came out with a corrected bill. We only had to pay for the 1 alcoholic drink our table had ordered. (We did also tip the waitress.)

Hanging out at the Larson house

    August 7, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Karl and Lori stopped by Morning Ale for tea and coffee on their way to the Larson house. The 5 of us sat and visited for quit awhile. Karl and Sam taught Jane the board game Wingspan while Cianna and Lori started making lunch. . . but could not locate a can opener. (Cianna thought they had one, but it was nowhere to be found.) Sam used various tools to open one of the cans, but we decided that we should probably just go buy one. After a quick trip to Target, Cianna and Lori came back with a can opener, more pot holders, and ice cream! While at Target, the others at the house watched 2 adult raccoons and 4 baby raccoons meander through the backyard. The adult raccoons walked on a tree to get over the chain link fence while the baby raccoons scaled the chain link fence.

We also went to the South Tacoma Antique Mall and wandered among the many booths. We even saw a fireplace that hangs on the wall - reminiscent of the one we used to have prior to the basement remodel.
