    Happy birthday to ME!

    October 5, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

I am traveling again! It's my birthday and I landed in Madrid this morning. Ten years ago today,
I celebrated with my mom and siblings and spouses in Barcelona, Spain! We had paella, hoping to have that again on this trip. I am here to visit Andrew and Dani. Those who followed my Malawi trip can opt out/unfollow if you don't want to read about this trip. But it's going to be a fun one!
My flights were easy and short compared to Malawi, only 6 1/2 hours from Philadelphia to Madrid, and the flight to Philly was only 90 min. Spain is 6 hours ahead of the East coast USA. I landed around 8am in Madrid and then had a few hours to wait at the train station before catching a train to Puerto de Santa Maria, where Andrew and Dani live. A really smooth 4 hour ride on the fast train, and here I am. Dinner and bed for me as I only dozed on plane and train.

  • Adventures in transportation!

    October 6, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

And you thought I was just going to Spain? Surprise! After 12 hours of good sleep I woke at 9am ready to go. After a late breakfast, we packed for the weekend. Today we are heading to Lisbon, Portugal 🇵🇹, where Andrew and Dani will run a half marathon on Sunday. We walked close to 2 miles to the train station and rode the train for an hour north to Seville. From the train station we took a local bus to the bus station, and got on a Flixbus to Lisbon, about a 5 hour ride. Yay for public transportation! We then walked around the bus station to our hotel. Andrew planned all this so well! It was 10pm when we checked into the hotel, so it's time for bed. Sightseeing in Lisbon tomorrow.......no pics today.Read more

  • Lisbon

    October 7, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 70 °F

We had a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, then walked a couple of blocks across the street to the arena where Andrew and Dani picked up their race packets, bib number and tshirt for the race tomorrow. Then we got on a public bus to where the finish line will be, and arranged a meeting place. The high tomorrow is going to be 90 again, so they moved the start time from 10:30am to 9 am to try to beat the heat. On the corner of the square where the finish line is, we visited the codfish museum. Interesting history of Portugese codfising off the coast of Newfoundland. Walked some more to see an elevator that takes people up a hill. The line to ride it was hours, so we didn't go up, but it was interesting. Found a huge fabric store, then stopped for a snack of pastries, including ham and cheese croissant, plain croissant, and little Custard pies, it was all so good. Walked some more and realized we didn't want to wear out the runners so took the bus back to the hotel- a 30 min ride. stopped on the way back to see the National Tile Museum, so many beautiful tiles. Definitely the inspiration for the game Azul. Some similar to quilts i have made. We rested for awhile, A&D went to the hotel pool. We walked down the street to a nice local restaurant for supper, then headed back so we could all get a good night's sleep for the big day.Read more

  • RACE DAY!

    October 8, 2023 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 79 °F

This is the reason we are in Lisbon. Andrew and Dani ran the Lisbon Half Marathon. They each had a personal goal time to finish the race and they were both pleased that they did better than they expected. They got up early to catch the shuttle bus that takes them to the start of the race. I didn't have to rush so much, had time for a leisurely breakfast, then went to catch the bus to take me to the finish line. After waiting for half an hour and no busses, I walked around the corner to the metro/subway station. I had to change lines once and then walk a couple of blocks and made it in plenty of time for Andrew's finish. He was 39th overall out of 15000 runners and the first American to finish-time 1:18.30. Then we waited for Dani to cross the finish line in 2:27.30. It was pretty hot-upper 80s- and they were worn out, so we took the metro back to the hotel for showers and rest time.
We took a stroll on the waterfront before catching a bus back downtown for a special dinner out that Andrew had reserved. We wandered through a typical city neighborhood, up a hill with narrow passages and twists and turns. It was steep, but so interesting. The restaurant was O Corrido, a Fado restaurant. Fado is the music of Portugal 🇵🇹, traditionally an expressive singer accompanied by a portugese guitar and an acoustic guitar, performing in a fairly intimate setting , like a Cafe or pub. We had a 3 course dinner with music between each course. Food was good, as was the music and overall experience. Then a walk downhill back to the bus, back to the hotel to sleep before an early bus trip in the morning.

  • Another travel day

    Oct 9–15, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We got up at 6am to get ready, had breakfast at the hotel and walked across the street to the bus station for our trip back to A & D's house. The reverse of Fridays travels- long bus ride to Seville, then a city bus to the train station, then a 2 hour train to Puerto de Santa Maria, then a cab ride to the house. By now it was 7:30pm and we were hungry, so we walked to a nearby neighborhood to have a nice dinner and then were all ready for bed.Read more

Dani is feeling better. We got another big load of laundry hung, menus planned, and grocery list made. Chill afternoon, then went to the Navy base to pick up Andrew at work. He gave me a driving tour of the base, it's much bigger than I expected. Then we drove to the small town of Rota on the opposite side of the base from where A & D live. It is a cute beach town. We walked on a boardwalk next to the Atlantic Ocean and had dinner at a nice restaurant on the beach. Walked back to the car, back to the house, and it's bedtime.Read more

  • NAVY BALL!

    October 13, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

This morning while Andrew was at work, Dani and I took a walk-at least 3 miles to the next little town on the waterfront. There is a lighthouse there but you can't go up it. But we did get th see a huge group of sailing dinghies- one person boats- in the harbor. There had to be at least a hundred of them. It was so fun to watch and really made me remember my sailing days in high school. Between the lighthouse and their house is a forest, the trees look like Dr Suess trees! The weather has been glorious, a little hot but so nice, cooling off in the evening. I sleep under an open window each night.
After a lunch of grilled cheese sandwiches, we hung out yet another load of laundry, then had some chill time and I did my nails because tonight we are hoping to the ball! Each year the Navy celebrates its birthday with a formal affair. I am grateful that Dani and I are close enough in size that I can wear one of her gowns. I even put on makeup!

  • Vejer, Roman ruins and Taylor

    Oct 14–21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 70 °F

After a late night, we had to get up early for an all-day trip sponsored by the base. We got on a bus and rode a little over an hour to a whitewashed village up in the hills called Vejer. It is a popular tourist spot for good reason, it is beautiful. We had a 2 hour walking tour to learn the history of the area and see the significant buildings, including a Moorish castle. Had lunch at an outdoor Cafe on the square-Plaza de Espana- then wandered our way back to the bus for part 2 of the day trip. We drove about 1/2 an hour south to the Atlantic coast to the ancient Roman ruins of Belio Claudia from the 2nd century. It was quite an extensive site that has been excavated. It was a fishing port for a couple of hundred years. The ruins of three aqueducts that brought freshwater several km have been found, and pieces of pipe. it was really interesting to see. Bus ride back to the base, about an hour and 45 min. Andrew ran for an hour while Dani and I went into the town of Rota to get supper from McDonalds. Then we went to the drive in on base to watch the Taylor Swift movie. Another late night but we can sleep in in the morning.Read more

  • El Puerto de Santa Maria

    October 16, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

Today we stayed local. Andrew went to work. Dani and I walked to the beach, about a mile and a half. We walked along the Playa, a pretty walkway. Forecast had said rain all week a couple of days ago but it was beautiful, nice breeze and mid to upper 70s. Then headed to Castillo de San Marcos, where they had an audio guided tour. It is a small but very interesting 13th century castle built over a mosque. It also had a wine cellar, but that was not open for tastings, so I didn't get to taste their specialty, sherry, which I have never tried. At the end of the tour, you could go up in the tower. I got a little nervous on the stairs. They were so narrow and steep, glad it was only two flights. Going down was even worse, but the view of the city from the tower was great. By the time the tour was finished It was close to three, had not had lunch yet. But guess what, it's siesta time, almost everything is closed from 2-4. So I grabbed a snack at a grocery store and ate back at the house. A & D have a couples Bible study on Mondays, where they eat supper together. I stayed at the house and had leftovers and watched Netflix. I was tired after all the walking. The total was a little over 5 miles.Read more

Today was a chill day because for the rest of my time here, we will be busy every day.
So we slept in, had leisurely breakfast, read, talked. Then walked to the grocery store for some lunch supplies. In the afternoon we played games, I beat Dani in both games of Chutes and Ladders and both games of Sorry. Then I made pasta and meatballs for supper.

  • Shopping

    October 18, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

Dani and I went to a nearby town, Jerez, to Ikea, and had lunch there after wandering through the store. Pretty much the same as in US. Then we spent the afternoon at the mall nearby. It was very similar to malls at home except there were a lot of people shopping! Especially considering it was Wed afternoon. Prices seemed comparable. Didn't buy much, but I enjoyed shopping with Dani! Stopped at the base on the way back and picked up Andrew, and also picked up pizza on base for supper.
We played Upwords after we ate, and guess who won? Yes, I did. Forecasted rain all day never happened.

    October 19, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 68 °F

Again the forecast was for rain all day, it did rain all night. It was windy and cloudy, so Dani and I decided we would pack rain gear and try to walk to the beach again and maybe go the other direction on the promenade. We got close, and it started light rain, so we turned around. Then it stopped, so we walked to a park closer to home and then stopped at the grocery store for supper supplies. And just as we got to the house, a nice light rain started. It is my last full day here. The evening was very windy with heavy rain. We called Caleb to wish him happy birthday and see all the cousins together. There is still quite a bit of rain in the forecast, hope it blows away as Andrew has a full 4 days planned before I leave.Read more

  • on the road again

    October 20, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 64 °F

While Andrew was at work, we packed and cleaned up the house. Then went to the base to pick up Andrew. It was a beautiful sunny day after much rain overnight. It was also cooler. We drove 90 min to Seville, where we will be for 2 nights. This is a beautiful town, the architecture, the greenery....
but the traffic is a bit challenging. Andrew has adapted well to Spanish driving. He parked the car in an underground downtown garage, and then we walked to the hotel. We are staying in an area where it is very challenging to drive due to very narrow streets. And downtown hotels don't have any parking. The walk was less than 15 min, and I was grateful to see the hotel had an elevator as I was pushing my wheeled carryon suitcase over the cobblestone streets. I did carry it up 2 flights of stairs in the garage. This is such a neat neighborhood, called Barrio Santa Cruz. Andrew says it is one of the largest closely connected, mostly pedestrian areas in Spain. After checking in, we walked around the block to a Flamenco museum. It wasn't very big, then went downstairs to see a real Flamenco show. It was also a small venue, maybe 50 seats, in kind of a basement with exposed brick walls. We weren't allowed to take pics of the dancers, but they were really good. It was an hour show, from 7-8pm, then we strolled through the neighborhood, where everyone was out walking, drinking at bars, just hanging out. We had a 9pm dinner reservation, and the whole area was so crowded. And it was such a pleasant walk to the restaurant and then back to the hotel around 11pm. More of Seville tomorrow!

  • Seville

    October 21, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

We all slept in until 9am. Then went walking- it's another beautiful day-and crossed the river and visited Triana section of Seville where there are a number of ceramic shops. So I did get a few pieces as souvenirs. Then we stopped and had coffee and people watched for a bit before walking back across the river and had lunch at 100 Mandicitos(kind of like a sub shop but all the sandwiches are cute little ones, size of half a hot dog). Next we went on a guided walking tour of Seville Cathedral, third largest in the world, after Peter's Basilica and St Paul's in London. At the end of the tour, we had the opportunity to climb the Giralda bell tower, up 35 ramps, and then 17 stairs(338 ft or about 30 stories). I wasn't sure I could do it, but it turned out ramps are much easier than stairs to climb and the views from the top were amazing. The tower was in a picture that I took last night, I forgot to take a picture of it today. By the time we finished the Cathedral, it was after 5pm. Andrew wanted to get a run in but Dani and I just wanted to rest. We had a lovely Spanish dinner at a restaurant right around the corner from the hotel. It was a typical supper of tapas, small plates(that aren't really that small) more like appetizers. One was hummus and veggies, one was chichirrones, which is thin slices of roast pork with a creamy something, the last was fried large shrimp and fried cod with black garlic aioli. All were really good. Live music from a guitarist, and we were seated in a pretty courtyard outside. It was a really nice evening. 12000 steps today. Back on the road tomorrow.Read more

  • Seville day 2 and travel

    October 22, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 70 °F

Andrew got up early for a long run while Dani and I slept a little later, then got up to pack. Checking out of Seville today. After stowing our luggage in the car, we did a walking tour of the Real Alcazar- or the royal palace- of Seville. It was unbelievably beautiful and wrll preserved, with three separate palaces. Each was built by a different king, and each was a completely different style of architecture. The ceilings in each room were particularly spectacular. Apparently, there are fantastic gardens, but they were closed due to the rain. It is right next to the Cathedral so I got a daylight pic of the bell tower from yesterday. The tour was a couple of hours, and by the time it was done, it had started raining. We had lunch and then got to the car and headed for or next stop. Andrew and dani have not been farther north than Seville, so this is all new places for them too. We went a little over an hour north to Cordoba, where we will spend one night. Our hotel is across the street from the alcazar here. While Andrew explored a little, Dani and I rested, then we went to a cute hole-in-the-wall restaurant for dinner, and had some Gelato ice cream for dessert.
More tours tomorrow! And more rain 🌧 in the forecast.

  • Cordoba and back on the road

    October 23, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

This morning, Andrew went for a run while Dani and I got dressed and packed up. We put our luggage in the car before going out. There was a lovely breakfast buffet at the hotel, so we had a nice breakfast and then walked to where we would meet our tour guide for today. I was wrong about the building across from the hotel. It was the Mosque-Cathedral wall facing our window. More on that building later.
We went on a 2 1/2 hour tour of Cordoba and learned a great deal of Spanish history. It has been controlled by visigoths, Muslims, Christians at various times, and there was also for some years a Jewish population. We saw a small synagogue that later became a church after Jews were driven out of Spain. It is amazing that we are standing in buildings that are 700-1500 years old, not reproductions, the actual buildings from as early as the 8th century.
The highlight of the tour was the most crazy, unusual historic place I have ever seen. The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba has been alternating as a Christian church and then a Muslim Mosque since mid 6th century. The architecture changes with each time period, as another addition is built onto the original. There are two cathedrals and 60 some little side chapels, as well as Mosque areas that could hold up to 30,000 men for prayers. There is Muslim architecture with so many beautiful arches and tile works, and finally, Gothic cathedrals with Renassance art, a pipe organ from the 15th century, and so much art. And an orange grove courtyard. And a bell tower that was built over a minaret. And the cathedrals were fully surrounded by the Mosque. Mass has been held daily in the main Cathedral since 1236! It was all so amazing!
It was nearly 3pm by the time the tour was finished, so we needed some lunch. Andrew found a Moroccan tea room, where we had Chai tea and lentil soup. And it had a great atmosphere. We sat on a couch filled with blue cushions. And while we were eating, the forecasted rain began to fall. Some very heavy rain. So we took our time and let the rain ease up a bit before walking back in lighter rain to the hotel to get the car and get on the road.
It was a 3 1/2 hr drive to Toledo. Pretty scenery and through forests, mountains, clouds and olive groves, in that order. The rain was light for most of the trip and had stopped by the time we reached our destination. Since it was nearly 9pm by the time we checked in to the hotel, we decided to do the fast option for supper. Burger King was next door to the hotel and it made our decision easy. I will do a second post of pictures as it is hard to choose only 10 from today. Sightseeing tomorrow.

  • Toledo

    October 24, 2023 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

We started the day with breakfast at a little place across the street from the hotel. They served " American breakfast"- 2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 sausage and 2 pieces of toast, coffee and juice. Bacon was undercooked, and sausage was chorizo. But the rest was good. Then we got on the Hop On-Hop Off bus to see Toledo. It is an old walled city on top of a hill. We got beautiful views of the city from the bus and got off at the top of the hill. First, we went to the Alcazar, (palace or fortress) and saw a public library on the top/fifth floor. We walked up the stairs , all five floors. There was also an Army museum, but most of it was closed today. The museum was built over Roman and other early ruins, which were left exposed for viewing. Then we walked through the cities' narrow, twisty cobblestone streets to get to the Cathedral. It was a big, beautiful Gothic cathedral. We didn't do a tour, just walked in and looked around a bit. Then, we wandered into the Jewish quarter and saw a historic synagogue. We stopped for lunch. Finally, we went to the Monastery of San Juan de Reyes, a 15th century cloistered Cathedral. It had a nice courtyard garden, cloisters, really funny gargoyles, and a beautiful church. From there, we walked downhill to St Martin Bridge and walked across it. We also got to see some girls zipline over the Tagus River. I didn't do it this time. We caught the Hop on bus and rode back to the hotel. But first we walked to a nearby grocery store to get some breakfast rolls as we have an early start tomorrow.
At the hotel, I did my final packing for going home, and we rested a bit before hopping back on the bus for a nighttime guided walking tour. It was an hour and only one other lady showed up so it was like a private tour! The guide showed us such interesting and unique things about her city, and we really enjoyed the tour. We saw very tall doors from when people would ride on their horse into the courtyard, and the door knockers were placed high so a rider could knock without dismounting. We saw a home from 8th century and she said it had the oldest balconies in town. The streets were not well lit and no one was out walking around. Such a change from daytime. It has been surprising to me how many tourists are here this time of year. I would hate to be here in summer. It was definitely a memorable way to end my time in Spain.

    October 25, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We had to get up at six to drive to Madrid, to take me to the airport. It is normally an hour drive, but this morning, there was light rain and heavy traffic most of the way, making the trip 90 minutes. I still had time to get checked in, but there was no extra time at all. Took an hour from leaving the car to getting to the gate as boarding started. I usually like a little more time than that. The flight was 8 1/2 hours to Charlotte. I am sitting the CLT airport now and will board my flight for Greenaboro shortly. It has been such a goid trip but it will also be good to be home for a month before my next trip!Read more
