Daytona Beach

A road trip to visit Daytona Beach. Some of the beach on the barrier island has orange sand, some is white but all of it is solid packed and it’s really very long, making it the perfect location for speeding cars. Beyond the beach Daytona Beach includes an intercostal waterway, and some large houses, honestly we weren’t impressed.Read more
TravelerNext time you are out we will take you to a better beach. The Daytona waterfront is a beach town in decline.

Yard art Over the top

We just came up on this roadside store in the middle of nowhere Florida, half way between Daytona Beach and The Villages. We just had to stop to check it out. Disney Springs

Adventuring in Florida wouldn’t be complete without a brush with Mickey. As we didn’t have the extra 300.00 a ticket for Walt Disney World tickets we settled for a visit to Disney Springs. At its base it’s a high end shopping and dinning experience. Then they “Disney-fied” it and out popped this place. We ate and walked around. Lunch was 45.00 and I had a 16.00 chocolate drink with Bourbon.
We left feeling lighter in the wallet but happier to have visited.Read more

Brightline train from West Palm Beach to Miami. Then the hop on hop off bus for the day. It was a good overview of the city including a brief rain storm. Seemed like a town we could spend a month in as the public transit appeared possible.Read more

TravelerVery nice. We did not get the premium class. Premium included drinks and a lounge. We didn’t need anything to drink and we were happy looking out the window. We bought our ticket to Miami in advance. For the return we waited until we knew what time we were going to head back and we bought at the station.

Wynwood Walls-a mural art gallery

You’ve got to hand it to the City of Miami for working with a developer to get a graffiti wall mural museum up and running. The colors were beautiful and the art creative. I’m not really sure how it is possible to expand or grow the museum when all of the art is on the walls of buildings. I guess someone has worked that out.Read more

TravelerDefinitely worth a visit. Many of the wall murals had a QR square that made the art start moving. Not just little stuff but people walking across the wall and color changing. Could not capture it to posting. I guess some things just need to be done in person!

We Know Where It Is 5:00 Somewhere

Are you curious where it is 5:00? It’s at the Square Grouper in Jupiter, Florida. What is a Square Grouper? It’s the locals name for a kilo of cocaine that is tossed overboard during a raid. It’s also the name of a lively beachside/ marina side bar. Oh, and it’s also the location of the Alan Jackson, Jimmy Buffet music video “It’s 5:00 somewhere”. Add in the live band, great company and beautiful weather on a Sunday afternoon and it’s another reason why this area is a return visit.Read more

West Palm Beach Family

Wow! As we wrap up our time in Florida and get ready to “jump the pond” we continue to spend time with family. This time with my mom’s sister, my Aunt Dottie. She is a kick and a pistol. Her home on the inner coastal waterway is beautiful and Tequesta is another of the many towns we will have to make our way back to for a deeper dive.

I am so happy that Dottie is living her best life. Her smile and joy is contagious. I’m also so very sad, as I can see glimpses of how my own mother might be if dementia and its side effects hadn’t taken her too soon.

I hear my mom’s voice in Dottie’s and I’m pleased to be near her, if only for a while.Read more

Another day, another beach

I drove Julie to Pompano beach so she could pick up a truck. We had a nice lunch on the beach. Then I took the slow road home along the beach. Many draw bridges along the road. They open every 30 minutes on either the top and half hour, or at 15 & 45 after the hour.Read more

Florida Departure

It’s been a month since we returned from Hilo and started our time in the U.S. this adventure was filled with 7 states, family and friends, and new friends and a couple of alligators, and an eclipse. It’s been great, and warm, and rainy, and warm.
* 13 beds, hotels and friends homes on this trip
* 100 miles per day on average, not including golf cars!
* San Francisco to Miami on the ground. Taking time to see towns along the road.

Next stop Edinburgh, Scotland for the merry month of May. Watch for a new penguins chapter starting May 1st.Read more
