Annapurna Base Camp here we come! We started the trek on Friday with a jeep ride from Pokhara, about 1.5 hours. We walked an hour and a half, lunched, and walked a couple hours more. It was really hot and pretty steep. We were all grateful to made it to Tikhedunga. We stayed in a simple guest house with a shared bathroom (almost all will be like that) surrounded by jungle and the sound of the river. No outlets in the room, leeches in the grass, but a filling dinner, fun conversations and a good night.
Saturday, we took a jeep ride to skip a really steep section, and then walked another 3 hours to Ghorepani. Much cooler weather, the best Tibetan bread, and both outlets and private toilets in our rooms!
Today, some of our group woke up at 4:30 to walk an hour up to Poon Hill for the sunrise. The sky was clear and the view perfect! Worth the sweat. Then we split ways after breakfast. Mimi and Papa left for home, the kids got on ponies to keep trekking fun, and the rest of us walked about 5 more hours to Tadapani. Hard but so pretty. We are on stone paths most of the time winding up and down hills to get around to the backside of Annapurna. We actually went down more than up today, but we still went up plenty!Baca selengkapnya

PelancongThese photos are amazing, I love the stone walkways, and the group pictures with your parents! I love that you all got to experience us together. Way to go, I know it has been challenging! I bet you are really exhausted at the end of the day but what an adventure! incredible to see the country this way. I love the horse pics! ❤️

We made it to Nepal! It feels like our second home. We arrived Monday afternoon. We are staying with the Adhikari’s—they built a new house and we have two rooms there. It’s a little farther out from town, and the city lights and the hills from their roof at night is so pretty. It also means that there are bigger bugs. We had a spider in the bathroom the size of my palm!
We spent most of Tuesday at Pharakilo Ghar/Spacious Place. Most of the kids are back in their villages for the Dashain festival school break—a whole month! We hope many will come back before we leave, but it was really nice catching up with Suna, Kopila, and Kasiram. There were a couple of other new kids that we are looking forward to knowing better soon.
Wednesday morning we picked up my parents at the international airport and then walked over to the domestic one for our short flight to Pokhara. We’ve been exploring the lakeside area, picking up last minute gear, paddle boating, and eating lots of good food. It’s been great to see the kids connecting—they are having a great time.
Tomorrow we start our Annapurna base camp trek! We are planning for 8 days of hiking, staying at different tea houses each night. We will see how it goes!Baca selengkapnya

What a time we’ve had in New Zealand! Just a little over two weeks, and we’ve seen and done so much. More than any of us expected. Since I last posted, we’ve explored cities, witnessed the All Blacks keep their 35-year home game win streak alive, visited the art museum, and seen movie making processes at Weta Workshop.
Overall winners from New Zealand
Favorite towns:
•Wanaka—we loved the ski town vibe and the pretty lake.
•Queenstown—bigger but close to so many good places. Again mountains+ lake combo, and Driftaway was the best campsite.
•Kaikōura—this one surprised us. But being on the coast with such beautiful views made us want to spend more time there.
Best hikes:
•Sealy Tarns—one of our first hikes. So many steps but the views were absolutely stunning. We were proud of ourselves and would do it again (at least most of us would!)
•Lake Mattheson—so peaceful and all the reflective views of the lake and a nearby small pond. This one also had a lovely cafe and shop nearby in the middle of nowhere. It was the best way to spend a morning.
•Kaikoura—our walk along the coast had epic views of nearby peaks and closeups of seals and birds. Really lovely.
Best Food:
•We tried meat pies, which are kind of like a mini, two-crust quiche but filled with steak and cheese or chicken stew—super hot and tasty. We see why they are everywhere here.
•Lemon sodas—Lemmy was the best, but we had L&P (best name :), and several others. Some of them tasted like lemonade and others like sprite.
•Asian food—we’ve had bao bun “tacos”, Vietnamese food, Malaysian noodles, and many dumplings. Trying to space it out so we have room for lots of dal bhat in Nepal.
•Cookie: CookieTime
Best Lingo:
•Drew: “nar”
•Lois: “absolutely”
•Lauren: “lovely”
We are 2/3 of the way to Nepal now—layover in Guangzhao. Looks like the chiefs are winning!Baca selengkapnya

PelancongLove your ratings of places and foods! I’m imaging how much Drew enjoyed the rugby game!! Looking forward to your news from Nepal! 🥰

PelancongThanks. Yes, Drew loved it. I did, too. We are waiting for our last flight to take off. Hoping that ranking things will help us remember it all! :)

PelancongWhat a blessing to spend two weeks in such a beautiful place. Thank you for sharing all your favorite moments. I definitely love the “Nar Nar” haha…. Look forward to hearing from you guys from China! 🪭

We’ve been on the move the last few days, exploring further north on the South Island and doing our best to stay ahead of the rain. Fewer rainforests, but fascinating rocks and jagged coastlines. The roads are as twisty as Nepal’s but paved and well maintained. Driving 3-4 hours feels like a long day, so we’ve kept our drives shorter.
We saw the pankake rocks at Punakaiki, the seals at Fowlwind, stars galore at Hamner Springs, and fur seals mixed with bird colonies in beautiful Kaikoura. It’s so rural, we got behind a guy driving his cattle with a 4 wheeler.
We cleaned out the van this morning and are sitting down for brunch before we drive the last couple of hours and turn it in. We will stay in real beds tonight in Christchurch and then fly to Auckland tomorrow morning. One night there to see the All Blacks play rugby and then it’s off to Nepal!Baca selengkapnya

PelancongI like the way you see the world Lauren. The rocks look like a cat, tiger head with seals sleeping on it…

PelancongJust wonderful, Lauren! I love the clouds and the shells…. so fun to see all of God’s creation!💙

PelancongThank you! It’s easy to stop and stare at dozens of things each time I’m outside. I will miss this place. 💕

We left Wanaka Sunday and headed west towards the coast. We weren’t sure how far we would get before dark. We stopped for a little walk at some blue pools that were gray because of heavy rains, which was a bit of a bummer. We kept driving and made it to Fox Glacier, where we did a night hike in the woods to see glow worms! Really hard to photograph, but Drew got a decent one. They are light little blue points of light dotting the trees along the path. You can’t see them unless you turn off your flashlights. Truly magical to be in a silent forest with twinkling blue starlight surrounding you. We all loved it, and it was a good end to a long driving day. We also came across a stoat, which Lois decided she’d like as a pet. Look it up for a photo—looks like some mix of a cat and a lemur. :)
Trying to stay ahead of the rain, we headed up the cost and stopped for three short walks along the way. Lake Matheson had beautiful reflecting ponds, Franz Josef had views of a receding glacier (it filled the valley 100 years ago!), and Hokitika Gorge was another lovely walk with water that should have been blue but was gray from the rain.
We stayed at a simple campground on the coast and made soup for dinner. Heading out soon to go a little further north before we head back to the East coast—only 3 more nights in the van!Baca selengkapnya

I thought you were trying to get a picture of the Southern Sky until I read the description 🤩

PelancongActually I did try to do that but it didn't turn out great either. There are a few "dark sky" observatories out here though and you can see the Milky Way clearly... I just don't know how to capture it very well with my cell phone camera

Pelancong
Is that a snowfield in the same area as the previous photos of ferns and moss?

PelancongIt’s a glacier! You can see it from the rainforest hike we were on.

Queenstown has been our latest stop. We found the prettiest “holiday park”, right on the lake We arrived Thursday evening, and decided to do a big hike from the top of a gondola the next morning. We had trouble parking our giant van and ended up finding a public parking lot about a mile away. We met a paraglider on the way up the gondola, and he recommended a different route for better views. We spent 30 min or so trying to find our way through the trees before heading to the standard path. The hike was pretty but it was muddy and snowy and very uphill. We made it most of the way up before heading back. Drew and Lois did the luge run at the top of the gondola several times, which was much more fun. We got dinner and explored some shops on the way back to our van. There was a gorgeous sunset during our short drive, but it faded before we could get out of the car. It was that kind of day. :)
The paraglider also told us we needed to check out Glenorchy, a small town about an hour away. We walked to get coffee this morning and decided to set out. We chose a couple of gentle trails, ate dumplings for lunch, and found a lord of the rings location (Drew re-enacted a bit for Lois). There were cows, sheep, birds, and beautiful landscapes in every direction. It was just what we needed. Tomorrow we will leave Queenstown.Baca selengkapnya

New Zealand 4–Lauren (leaving Milford)
18 September, Selandia Baru ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C
We spent a lovely 2 nights in Milford Sound. It was very wet, with heavy rain and wind making it a little hard to sleep the first night. But most of the time it was just a steady light rain, and we learned that the hundreds of waterfalls we saw disappear hours after the rain ends. It was a gift to be in such a lovely place. We used the time to talk to family and do some planning for Nepal. We also decided to eat dinner at the fancy restaurant there.
This morning we took a cruise tour of the sound—we learned that it’s really a fiord (glacier made instead of river made). We went all the way out to where it meets the Tasman Sea. It was longer than I thought. I saw a little black head bobbing in the water, and I thought it was a duck, but it was a penguin! A Fiordland penguin—he wasn’t very big, maybe a foot long. It made my day!
After the cruise, we drove back through the road that had been closed. Rivers were gushing with all the fresh rainwater, and we saw a rainbow. They are hard to get on camera—especially while driving, but this was one the 3rd so far on our trip. A kea bird said hello to us while we waited to drive through the tunnel leaving Milford. They are curious alpine parrots with red feathers under their wings.
We stopped for a yummy lunch of bao buns and edamame in Te Anau, and then drove to Christchurch. About 4 hours total driving today. We plan to stay here two nights and hope to do some hiking. Tomorrow should be sunny.Baca selengkapnya
