    Arrival in Mao

    October 10, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We picked up our Owners Cars Opel Crossland and drove the short distance to Es Castel where we checked in at the Barcelo Hamilton and began our stay with a glass of ‘champagne’. The hotel overlooked the entrance to the harbour and our room was on the 4th floor with balcony overlooking the views.
We wandered down the quayside to the end where we found a little inlet , Calles des Fonts, with boats and restaurants and met baby Tonina and the others and had a look around the apartment where they were staying. It was a short walk to the supermarket where we stocked up on a few things for a scrumptious lunch.
In the afternoon we got to our room and had a rest and did some painting. Of picturesque boats.
After a walk along the boardwalk with Mark, Dorado was on the menu this evening accompanied by a white Rioja.

    Exploring

    October 10, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

On our first full day we met up with Mark and set off for Cuitadella at the other end of the island. On the way we had a few recommendations, though first we headed up the highest point El Toro, for amazing panoramic views, if you could avoid the telecom masts!
Back down we explored the museum of antiquities with a very fine display of local crafts along with a few ceramics, including some with turquoise bronze glaze, as part of a special exhibition.
Across the main road in El Marcadal, we stopped at a little patisserie where we bought some delights for Toni and Jen.
We then continued to our destination. On the way we stopped at one of the unique to Menorca ancient burial constructions which date from several centuries bc.
First impression was of a picturesque town with market and open squares. Just a short walk from where we parked, we found a cafe where we had a light lunch. In the afternoon we visited the cathedral and very interesting museum in a cloisters.
On the way back we turned north and stopped at a very pleasant town of Fornells for a coffee. Then we took a different road back which took us along the quayside of Mao.
This evening we wandered along to Calles de Fonts where we sat and had Pomada, local gin and lemonade , very pleasant. A little further round we stopped at Dinkum to eat, run by an Aussie of course. J had sole, me the slow roasted lamb shoulder, washed down with the house Rioja, followed by lemon meringue, all delicious.

    Mao and baptism

    October 11, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

The day of the baptism was also National day, so some things were closed including the water taxi and the distillery, shame! We walked into the capital, Mao partly along a dusty footpath, stopping for coffee by some huge sparkling yachts.
In the old town we explored the old fish market and found a church that was hosting a short organ recital. Next we found a small square for light lunch in the American Bar.
We had some difficulty finding the bus station and when we did there was a gap of two hours in the timetable , so we took a taxi back.
The baptism was at five and we met many of Toni’s large family as we walked the short distance to the church. Two babies were baptised and both were extremely good.
After we walked back down to the quayside where Toni’s grandma has an amazing five story house where the ground floor makes an entertainment space that opens on to the Quay. Festivities began and we were treated to some local and Mallorcan delicacies of pies and pizza, followed by biscuits and then hot chocolate with cake. Beer and wine flowed so the baby’s head was well and truly wetted, and the singing got underway. All the extended family members were very kind to us and chatted freely. We didn’t stay too late when the gin and tonics were rolled out, and strolled back by moonlight.

    More exploring

    October 12, 2019 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

On our last full day we went to Mass at 11 in Catalan. Then we joined Mark and headed out to Cala Galdana, on the south coast, which offered quite a different experience with sandy beach set in a cove surrounded by tall cliffs and some large hotel developments. Lunch of sardines with salad, finished off with ice cream was very pleasant. We finally found a small hat for baby in the sunshine.
From here we headed back and then north towards a lighthouse, which we found was 3km down a walk at the end, so didn’t actually see in the end. Next we tried the nature reserve but found the visitor centre closed so settled for a cafe at Es Grau and a paddle on the beach. All very pleasant. There’s nowhere we wouldn’t want to go back to.
Before returning to the hotel we stopped at another ancient site where there were extensive discoveries of 3 to 1 centuries bc.
For dinner we had g&t then fish and pork.
In a few days we packed a good deal, though had less time in the hotel than we might have wished.
