Malta ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡น

Short but highly required holiday during a very crazy time ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ
Iโ€™m expecting slow mornings with strong coffee โ˜•๏ธ, salty swims ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ‘™in crystal-clear water - well at least Iโ€˜ll try ๐Ÿฅถ - and evenings filled with sunset views ๐ŸŒ… and good food ๐ŸŽฃ๐ŸŸ.

finally ready to go ๐Ÿš‰ ๐Ÿ›ซ

    February 19 in Switzerland โ‹… โ˜๏ธ 5 ยฐC

The saying usually says „the calm before the storm ๐ŸŒช๏ธ..well, but how could it be otherwise—for me, the last few weeks have been exactly the opposite ๐Ÿคฏ

After bringing back Basil ๐Ÿ•‍๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿ’™ and a quick stop in Ticino, I am finally on my way to Milan ๐Ÿ’บ๐Ÿš‰ and then Maltaโœˆ๏ธ.

My expectations are high ๐Ÿคฉ ..I wish for
    - warmer weather and sun โ˜€๏ธ that warms not only my face
    - Seafood ๐Ÿ ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿค that was basically still gossiping the morning before I eat it ๐Ÿ˜…
    - nice hikes ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿฅพ and beautiful views along the coast
    - suuunsets ๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ…๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿฅฐ
    - and finally just some rest..for both, the body & the soul

    Aah..and I just realized I don’t even have an accommodation yet ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜…

    Memo to self ๐Ÿคช:
    - find a bed for tonight
    - decide on why and what to do in Malta ๐Ÿ˜‚
    - do I need a car ?!?

  • first impact - looovely!

    February 19 in Malta โ‹… ๐ŸŒ™ 16 ยฐC

I somehow managed to find a cozy homestay in Birgu (or Vittoriosa? I don’t get the difference..) and I have to say: this part of Malta is exactly what I was looking for and already conviced me.

It is of quiet charm, with winding alleyways (I already got lost twice ๐Ÿ˜… and I just arrived…a biiig hooray to Dr Google Maps!) full of colorful wooden doors ๐Ÿšช๐Ÿšช - like ๐Ÿคฉ!!
Aannd it seems that nobody else visits Malta in February ๐Ÿคช

  • strolling through La Valletta

    February 20 in Malta โ‹… ๐ŸŒฌ 15 ยฐC

Decided to give the quicker crossing by sea๐Ÿšฃ a try.. I arrived ๐Ÿ˜…, Adrenaline hitting strong..

Before heading up to the Upper Barrakka Gardens and the saluting battery ceremony, I walked along the coast to Fort St. Elmo and the lighthouse, thinking about how much history this tiny capital holds ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

At the Upper Barrakka Gardens I paused above the Grand Harbour, watching boats of all kind drift below and the Three Cities glowing across the water, that endless Mediterranean blue - which I love & miss although not loving being in or on the water (๐Ÿ˜… hehehe I know I am a contradictory person ๐Ÿ˜ฌ).

  • ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿฅพ from Marsascala to Marsaxlokk

    February 21 in Malta โ‹… ๐ŸŒฌ 15 ยฐC

Wow what a coastline! ๐Ÿคฉ this pretty much sums it up..eheheh..

An almost 9km hike, most of it along the stunning and equally dramatic coastline of Malta!
the Mediterranean below was constantly shifting its shades of turquoise and deep blue ..aawwww๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉต

The route is raw & beautiful — sometimes rocky, sometimes smooth — always wide open to the sky.

It was a perfect day, even if considering the tiny panic attack that made it impossible for me to proceed to Hofriet Window ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜…

  • Mdina, Rabat & Dingli Cliffs

    February 22 in Malta โ‹… ๐ŸŒฌ 17 ยฐC

The day started with a ๐Ÿ˜ก๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ค๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿฅบ 2.5 hr wait for a bus that never came or better: didn’t stop at all ๐Ÿคฌ๐Ÿคฌ.. I suddenly felt back home in Sicily ๐Ÿ˜
    Today’s plan was to visit..
    1. the “Silent City” Mdina
    2. Rabat &
    3. the Dingli Cliffs

    To sum it up..
1 —> Mdina is ok but nothing special

2 —> Rabat offered a more local rhythm of life, with cozy cafés, historic churches, and really fascinating underground catacombs ๐Ÿชฆ๐Ÿชฆ that reveal Malta’s early Christian roots.

3 —> BEAUTIFUL ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ Dingli Cliffs provided the best and so far most breathtaking sunset view ๐Ÿฅฐ and I don’t think this can be topped tbh..

  • Comino Island, Popeye Village & Cliffs

    February 23 in Malta โ‹… โ˜€๏ธ 15 ยฐC

Last night my friend Nicole arrived on the island and will share the next few days with me ๐Ÿ™ƒ
our first trip was to Comino island - the tiny one between Malta & Gozo ๐Ÿ˜‰. And if you ever find yourself in Malta craving wild beauty and turquoise ๐Ÿ˜ water —> make time for it!!

You arrive at the absolutely dazzling Blue Lagoon (too many tourists BUT the water here glows in impossible (!!) shades of blue, clear enough to see every ripple in the sand below - really!!) and it instantly reminded me of my time on the Bahamas ๐Ÿ˜.
Basically, Comino is just sea ๐ŸŒŠ, sky and rock๐Ÿชจ, which invites you to take it slow and just hike around the island.

After coming back from Comino, we decided to head to see the nearby Popeye Village (the famous wooden film set) and to finish the day with a sunset at Popeye Cliffs ๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿคฉ.. the real magic is found THERE along the surrounding cliffs!! Wow wow wow ๐Ÿ’™

  • Blue Grotto & the supposed cliff hike ๐Ÿ˜“

    February 24 in Malta โ‹… โ˜€๏ธ 18 ยฐC

Well, this one was not a day for the books… besides the beautiful Blue Grotto, which was the start of our hike (should have been the end of the hike, but we hopped off the bus early because Nice fell sick on the crazy bus ride —> 1st bad decision of the day ๐Ÿ˜…), really NOTHING went smooth..

…a 12km hike to be remembered for:
“keep out, private property and do not choose this side of the island ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜…”

  • Manoel Island & La Valletta

    February 25 in Malta โ‹… โ˜€๏ธ 16 ยฐC

While Nicole today opted for an easy chill day at the hotel pool โ˜€๏ธ, I went for a short walk to Manoel Island and afterwards visited St. John Cathedral and the Caravaggio ๐Ÿคฉ in La Valletta.
Manoel Island lies between Sliema and Valletta and hosts Fort Manoel - a Fort that is closed and basically collapsing here & there, but that where you can have a quiet and peacefull stroll around and enjoy either La Valletta on the one side or Sliema on the other.

Stepping into St. John's Co-Cathedral โ›ช๏ธ๐Ÿ”” is literally like walking into a jewel box ๐Ÿ˜!! For those loving this kind of art - go, absolutely go!
The outside is surprisingly plain, but inside ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ — gold everywhere, marble tombs beneath your feet and ceilings that demand you stop and simply stare ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘€ AND wonder how they did this all back then…
But the wow moment was in the quiet side chapel, standing in front of “The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist” by Caravaggio. It’s raw, dark and feels like you were there as well. Worth every euro I paid.

  • Golden Bay & sunset at Ghajn Tuffieha

    February 26 in Malta โ‹… โ˜€๏ธ 17 ยฐC

Golden Bay is known for its Malta golden sand, the calm sea and the late afternoon light turning everything soft and golden… now, I don’t really like sand that much (at all tbh) ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜… but climbing down the long steps between red cliffs, and watching the sun melt into the horizon, with the sea glowing orange beneath it, was very very nice and the sunset spots around Golden Bay and especially the bay next to it are just ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜Read more

  • Clay Cliffs ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿฅพโ€”> Pullicino's Cove

    February 27 in Malta โ‹… โ˜€๏ธ 15 ยฐC

before flying back home ๐Ÿฅฒ Nicole joined me for a last wild hike on Malta’s Northern Coast from the Clay ridges to Pullicino’s Cove — or at least that direction ๐Ÿ˜‚

We started at Baia dell’Occhio di Mela - one of the most beautiful spots in Malta ๐Ÿฉต - and continued to the clay cliffs.
From the cliffs, we followed the dusty coastal path, a trail that isn’t polished or signposted in a grand way ๐Ÿคช๐Ÿฅฒ… it’s the kind of route you “feel & trust” rather than follow ๐Ÿคฏ…well…..
At times the path narrowed along steep drops ๐Ÿฅต and I was DAMN (!!) happy that today there was no wind - I am not sure I would have walked some of those paths with wind ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿซฃ.
At others, it opened into wide, rolling plateaus overlooking hidden coves and BEAUTIFUL landscapes. Malta has this way of surprising you. It looks so tiny on a map, but walking it feels expansive ๐Ÿ’š

After quite a steady stretch of hiking, and realizing how steep, slippery and loose the descent to Pullicino's Cove would be ๐Ÿ˜ฑ we decided to stay on the top and just enjoy the view before making our way back and finishing the day with (finally!! ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜ฌ) a dip in the sea ๐Ÿ‘™๐ŸŒŠ

Today’s hike with all the adrenaline, colors, silence and beauty from A to Z, will stay with me for sure, and honestly? That’s the Malta๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡น I’ll remember most I think ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿคฉ
