  • Amir in Abarkuh

    April 25, 2022 in Iran ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

We left the desert city of Yazd with a new cycling partner, Arnaud from France! Together we cycled into arid mountains in the desert and met Amir in the city of Abarkuh. He invited us for lunch and showed us around and introduced us to a tree which is over 4000 years old! Afterwards he accompanied us even a bit with his own bike,as he is a bikepacker himself too.Read more

  • Headwind before Eqlid

    April 26, 2022 in Iran ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We discovered the worst combination for bikepackers: strong headwind + going up a mountain + sand from the desert = not many km a day, but good mental training😅 Luckily we met Ali and Mohammed Reza who invited us to stay in Eqlid and showed us around the town.Read more

  • Hospitality in the beautiful valley

    April 28, 2022 in Iran ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Asking for water turned into an invitation for dinner, nice conversations with a little help from google translate and a lovely place to sleep at night. Thank you Fariba and family. The next day we headed to Perpolis, the ancient palace of Darius the great and his successors.Read more

  • Cyclists Meetup in Shiraz

    May 2, 2022 in Iran ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

We finally arrived on Shiraz, the birthplace of the Syrah grapevine. Sadly, no more Syrah wine here… at least officially 😉 Surprisingly, multiple cyclists arrived in Shiraz around the same time though all coming from different directions.Read more

  • Cycling towards the heat

    May 4, 2022 in Iran ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

While cycling to the southern coast of Iran we were suddenly hit by the heat as we descended from the mountains. Even the wind felt like an oven! Melissa struggled with a small heat stroke, thankfully we got a ride to the next gas station for water 🥵 since then we did not get out our sleeping bags and outer tent anymore.Read more

  • Seabreeze again!

    May 8, 2022 in Iran ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Finally, after 3 months we arrived at the coast again! Beautiful, empty beaches with perfect camping spots awaited us though with above 30 degrees cycling temperatures 🥵

  • Bandar Kong

    May 10, 2022 in Iran ⋅ ☀️ 35 °C

After getting a hitchhike to avoid sweating on the hot asphalt road, we arrived in Bandar Kong. A sleepy fishermen’s village with desert charm.

  • Qeshm island

    May 15, 2022 in Iran ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

What an island…. Camels trotting along the road, crazy stone formations, and young boys that barely walk driving their own motorcycles 😂… and of course there’s at least 3 boys on one motorbike… trying to do a wheelie.Read more

  • Foodprint Nr 4

    May 20, 2022, The Gulf ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Getting good food in Iran was a little challenging. We quickly learned that if you want good food you need to get invited by Iranian families. In this case Home is where the stomach lies. 😉

  • Hormuz

    May 22, 2022 in Iran ⋅ ☀️ 32 °C

On the Island of Hormuz you have the impression that you have landed on Mars. The stone, the sand and even the ocean is red. There is only one road of 26km circling around the island but it’s psychedelic landscapes makes you want to stay for a while…. Until the heat becomes unbearable… 🥵☀️🔥 This is where we became early birds and started our round tip of the island at 6am.Read more

  • Crossing the persian gulf

    May 27, 2022, The Gulf ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We bought ferry tickets to Dubai with a huge chunk of money (who can guess the amount?) Nevertheless, the ferry got cancelled due to bad weather. This resulted in a chain reaction of another visa extension, having to hitchhike back to Bandar Kong to get another ferry and using our last dollars to survive another couple of days in Iran (we ate a lot of soup 😅). Funnily this allowed us to meet other cyclists who also waited for the ferry. Another cyclist meet up!Read more

  • Bling bling Dubai

    June 2, 2022 in the United Arab Emirates ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Dubai is really another world compared to the south of Iran. Mega skyscrapers, bling palm trees and soooo many good restaurants. 🤤
As all eastern borders of Iran were closed still (Turkmenistan is closed due to Corona, Afghanistan is closed obviously and in Pakistan you are escorted by the police as it’s too dangerous in the south), we decided to take a flight to…. Bangkok! From there we will explore Southeast Asia on two wheels! 😍 we are looking forward to lush green Jungles and tasty food.
Though we realised that packing two bikes for the airplane is an adventure in itself. 😅

  • Southeast Asia adventure begins

    June 3, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Once we landed in in Bangkok, we had one pressing task: FOOD! Eating our noodle soup on the street at 8am in the morning, we realised we arrived in Asian food paradise! Bangkok truly felt like a vacation in our vacation, eating in night markets, strolling through parks and even a small Shanghai reunion. We definitely charged our batteries and stomachs for the next chapter of our trip. 😉Read more

  • Khao Yai National Park

    June 8, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We decided that we will cycle a lot lighter in SE Asia. Since there are so many food options on the streets we abandoned our cooking gear and food bags to maximise our food experience in SE Asia 😉 we also exchanged our tent with a mosquito net. With such light baggage we set off to Isan, the north east of Thailand. During the first couple of days of cycling we already saw more green than 2 months in Iran. 😅 We were in the jungle! Beware of the gibbon monkeys, they stole our sunscreen. 🙈Read more

  • More Nightmarkets

    June 10, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We encountered our first blocked road due to the monsoon season. But so far no cycling during the rain. The evening has become our favourite time of the day as we can nearly always find a night market with around 1000 different food options. 🤤Read more

  • The road to Laos

    June 14, 2022 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

  • Laos!

    June 15, 2022 in Laos ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

After some negotiation at the Thai Laos border to convince the police men that we can cross with our bikes and some heavy monsoon rains we finally arrived on the capital of Laos, Vientiane!! It feels surreal to have crossed a border after roughly a week after we spent so much time crossing Turkey and Iran.Read more

  • Foodprint Nr 5

    June 15, 2022 in Laos ⋅ 🌧 26 °C

Needless to say, the we were in good heaven when we cycled through Thailand! Everywhere where you look there is a place on the street that sells an amazing dish or desert. But we definitely needed to retrain our chilli tolerance 🌶🌶🌶 some dishes caused more sweating than cycling 😅Read more

  • Green green Laos

    June 21, 2022 in Laos ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

When we cycled into Laos we immediately noticed the slower pace compared to Thailand. Even the “big” streets on the map are basically running through sleepy villages where people sell papayas, pineapples and sticky rice. Cycling paradise…. We also tried floating on tubes on the river but after getting sunburns on our knees we decided cycling is the safer option… 😅Read more

  • Bit by a mosquito…

    July 1, 2022 in Laos ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Just before the old colonial city of Luang Prabang Marco got really high fever 😬 we went to the nearby hospital (luckily there was one as we weren’t in any big city) and with the help of google translate and body language we discovered that Marco got Dengue fever 🥵 apparently you get this via mosquito bites and there’s is no vaccine nor medicine designed for this. You can only suffer through it…. Luckily Marco made a full recovery in Luang Prabang, a beautiful old colonial town where temples meet old french colonial houses. To celebrate his recovery Marco shed his 2 kg heavy beard 😱Read more

  • Boat and bike

    July 6, 2022 in Laos ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Laos basically consists of mountains and rivers which means challenging hilly cycling but also amazing resting time for your legs when you can load your bikes on one of their wooden boats to go upstream for a while 😅Read more

  • Beautiful Nong Khiaw

    July 7, 2022 in Laos ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Nong Khiaw is tucked between steep Karst mountains and ideal for using our legs for walking for a change. Despite cycling many kilometres over hilly terrain, Melissa still gets the worse muscle ache from hiking 😅 We might have neglected other muscles needed for walking 🙈
We leave Nong Khiaw to go further north on the best and tiniest boat ever. Surprisingly all our panniers and our two bicycles fit on that slim strip of wood and we discover how many small villages are only reachable by boat along the River Nam Ou.
