Day 28 – Zurich: Circus, Cheese and Chinese Gardens
Saturday – Final day of Week Four

We woke at Harry and Sophie’s and, after some deliberation, decided to drive to Zurich. We arrived just in time for a fascinating walking tour of the Old Town—an hour and a half spent learning about the city’s evolution, its buildings, and the characters who shaped it.

Lunch was at Tibits, a vegetarian restaurant, before heading into the big top for the Knie Circus—a spectacular two-hour show filled with acrobats, musicians, singers, jugglers, clowns, visual artists, and even a troupe of horses. The clown in particular was hilarious, acting as a thread through the performance, and keeping the audience laughing throughout.

As we left, the rain gave way to sunshine again—perfect timing for a wander along the lake and through the Chinese Gardens. We rounded off the afternoon with a visit to what can only be described as a posh Swiss Waitrose, picking up supplies for dinner.

Sophie rustled up a delicious raclette—a table-top feast of grilled cheese over baby potatoes, with pickles, bacon, peppers, garlic and onions on the side. A proper Swiss treat. The day ended with a game of Spyfall. Gill was the spy three times, allegedly, and much laughter followed before we all collapsed into bed.

Another full, fun-packed day—exactly what we’ve come to expect from this unforgettable trip.

  • Day 29....

    8. kesäkuuta, Sveitsi ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    Travel Log – Day 29

Today we all piled into the van and headed to Kägiswil airstrip for an unforgettable hour-and-a-quarter flight over the Swiss Alps. Our pilot, Guillaume – a friend and former colleague of Sophie’s – took us soaring above glaciers, lakes, and jagged peaks. The turns were steep, the views breathtaking, and the turbulence strong enough to make a couple of us queasy (yes, the normal ones: Sophie and me). Lizzie even got to fly the plane for a moment – a definite highlight!

After landing, we had lunch beside Lake Thun at a Greek restaurant, where we enjoyed kebabs and gyros – though the absence of ice cream drew some mock lamentation about “Swiss specialties.”

Back at Harry and Sophie’s, we relived the day through photos and videos, and rounded things off with a hearty barbecue. Meanwhile, Sophie and Gill baked a banana cake to fuel us on the return journey through Switzerland and France – which begins tomorrow, after one last adventure: a trip to the zoo.

    9. kesäkuuta, Sveitsi ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

Final Day: Zurich Zoo and Farewells

Our last full day of the trip began at Zurich Zoo, an expansive and impressively designed site. The African habitats were the clear highlight – rhinos, giraffes, and zebras moving freely in well-planned enclosures – but we also watched chimps and elephants at ease in the warmth. Lunch was a relaxed Thai buffet before we carried on through the heat of the afternoon.

As departure loomed, Harry fetched the van, and we said our goodbyes to him and Sophie – they headed off by tram and train back to Zug. We'll see them again soon when they come over for Glastonbury. Gill and I then drove George and Lizzie to Zurich Airport for their 5pm flight, leaving us on the road north just after 3pm.

We made the first leg of the return journey – around three hours – to Langres a small town an hour from Troyes, our final overnight stop. Just a short drive to Calais remains before the ferry takes us home tomorrow, bringing our month of mountains, lakes, and laughter to a close.

  • And home...

    11. kesäkuuta, Englanti ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

    Final Day

We set off from the hotel on the outskirts of Troyes at around 7.15am, fuelled by a quick coffee and croissant, naturally. We made good progress through the quieter French roads skirting Reims, reaching Calais just after 11am—perfect timing for the midday ferry.

The crossing, though in the ‘quiet lounge’, was anything but—thanks to an exuberant group of French schoolchildren. Still, we docked back in the UK by 12.30 local time, refuelled, then battled some M1 traffic before pulling in at home by 5pm.

A little weary, yes—but our heads are full of incredible memories from a brilliant month exploring Italy and Switzerland. What a trip.
