    Mollymook to Geneva

    September 2, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Leaving Mollymook and driving to Sydney to fly out added many hours to our normal travel time but we were excited. Explored the old town and lakefront.

  • Chamonix

    September 4, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Gorgeous ski town. Took the cable car the Aiguille de Midi up to 3842m. Talk about dizzying. Really felt the effects of altitude. Tingling fingertips, racing heartbeat, feeling like almost ready to pass out. It is a stunning day though and the views are awesome. Yay! We’re in the mountains 🗻🏔👏👏👏👏Read more

  • Tour du Mont Blanc

    September 8, 2022 in France ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Bye to Chamonix. Hi to a great group of fellow trekkers. A family from Colorado, a mother and daughter from near Banff. And four more Americans plus us. Really nice people to travel with. Up and down over these mountains with great views!Read more

  • Walking into Italy

    September 9, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Fantastic day today. Weather quite crisp in the morning and at the top of the Col de la Seigne. Rest of the day just beautiful . Stopped at a fantastic spot for a break at Refuge Elizabetta right near the border of France and Italy.Read more

  • Refuge Bonatti

    September 11, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Walked Courmayeur to Refuge Bonatti. Perched high with an incredible view all the way. Most of the trip is 3 star hotels except for tonight. 😳

  • Up, up, up over to Switzerland

    September 12, 2022 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Todays walk took us from Italy into Switzerland. We hiked over a pass at 2537m high (Grand Col Ferret) and was around 20km in length. Tonight we’re at La Fouly. Todays height gain was 980m and the loss was 1400m. Gorgeous day. Started with the sun shining on the mountains behind us and with views all round all day.Read more

  • Still in Switzerland, at Triente

    September 14, 2022 in Switzerland ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Hiked a 16km day. Rained a bit just enough to get a bit of use of the waterproof gear we’ve been lugging everyday. These alps are so so high. We see some people trail running them which is astounding we feel. Walking up is tough enough. Height gain 850m, height loss 1040m. This means we’re down low in a valley and the only way out is up! 😩😬Read more

  • Madrid

    September 19, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

Woke up to snow on the mountains in Chamonix just as we’re ready to go. It was a fond farewell to a lovely town. Had dinner on the last night with our newfound TMB friends from Colorado and Seattle. Couldn’t have asked for a nicer group of trekkers and we will miss them. So we zipped over to Madrid where it is lovely and warm. We’ve enjoyed a couple of days here just wandering around, took a tour on the sightseeing bus as you do. Slept looong hours in a our hotel. We’ve been fully in recovery mode after the TMB. Scoffing cafe con leche, empanadas and tapas daily here. Not much in the way of photos to show. Went wandering and found a book each in the English section of a Spanish bookshop. Can’t be without books. Jem is donating his big leather hiking boots as he has no room for them in his case now. They’re pretty heavy and he will be needing some lighter ones for the future treks. (Xmas?) His toenails are black and he’ll lose them for sure. This may be the real reason for better boots. 😜Read more

  • Granada

    September 24, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Full on sightseeing mode here. Visited Montefrío and the Castle at Almodóvar del Rio. We have a driver take us to these two places and stopped at a couple castles on a hill. Today though was the visit to the Alhambra. Fortified citadel, palace and gardens overlooking the city of Granada.Read more

  • Generalife Gardens

    September 25, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Went back up to the Alhambre today to look around these gardens. The summer palace of the Caliphs. Very beautiful and loads of tourists to dodge. Really wanted to go to the Hammam Spa today too but it was booked out. 😌. We went to one in Cordoba and had a massage plus all the hot and cold pools and steam room treatments. It was divine. We are still not recovered from all the hiking we’ve done. Our legs don’t like any of the hills much after what we already did. 🥾🏔🏔🏔🏔🤪Read more

  • Castles on hills and Ronda

    September 26, 2022 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Took a drive through endless olive groves and windy roads through another town with a Castle on a hill and one with everything built into the side of a hill. Jem looooooves the crumbling ruins. He loves imagining the marauding Christians in the past charging through to capture the castles and send the Moors packing from Europe. (Or whatever went on, just boy stuff, fighting and armies and strategy)Read more

  • Cathedrals and Alcazars

    October 2, 2022 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Seville was so impressive. The cathedral so enormous our photos couldn’t even capture it. Of course we climbed to the top of it though and looked around the alcazar marvelling at the beauty of the architecture and gardens . Yesterday landed in Lisbon. Took the sightseeing bus this morning.Read more

  • I wandered lonely as a cloud

    October 6, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

…….that floats on high…. Ok enough you get it. Wordsworth country. We’re in the Lake District after flying from Lisbon to Manchester yesterday and driving up here in the afternoon. No daffodils but beautiful rolling hills and stone walls. Saw where Wordsworth is buried, the house he lived in plus Dove Cottage and Museum. Dove Cottage where he lived and wrote a lot of his poems. Was fantastic. It was a full day where we did what is expected. Ie ate scones with jam and cream and took a country stroll. Gazed upon herds of black faced sheep that dot the countryside. Think the breed is Herdwick. It’s also Derwent coloured pencil land. It’s a good time to come here, colours of autumn makes me want to get some pencils and start colouring in. Also…. plenty of hiking shops and I admit to spending a bit getting some great waterproof gloves and a few other things. Ready for our next hiking adventure. 👏😊 (am going to need to reconsider giving up hiking 😬)Read more

  • The West Midlands

    October 8, 2022 in England ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

Visited the final resting place of Jems Mum Edith in the garden where her beloved brother is also laid to rest. She always did want to be back in England and now she is…..Had a lovely lunch with Jems cousins Sarah and Stuart afterwards. Next day Went to the other side of Birmingham to see the Black Country Living Museum which was fantastic. Best museum ever. So fun to see how people lived in that time. Said hello to Tipton and I think the place Mum said goodbye to when they immigrated to Australia in 1956.
Then, drove to the Cotswolds for our last night and day wandering around the pretty old stone villages.

NOW WE ARE AT HEATHROW! Excited to go home. Great trip. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕👏👏👏👏 6 COUNTRIES, plenty history, architecture and general eyeballing! See ya next time Penguin lovers. Xx
