    Northampton

    June 5, 2023 in England

Did some shopping in the morning and a bit of tidying up the boat before meeting Steve and Sally from the station. The woman on the adjoining boat was not very happy to see a patterdale terrier who wanted to kill her kitten. Visited The Malt Shovel then back for roast lamb and blackberry crumble.Read more

Spent the morning in town shopping and looking around and stopped for a coffee and cake. Back for lunch then a quick trip to Waitrose followed by sitting in the bow reading. Nice relaxing day.

  • Rothersthorpe locks

    August 4, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

We set off earlier than expected and decided to tackle the Rothersthorpe locks today as the weather forecast is terrible for tomorrow. They were fine until we got to lock 13 when we encountered the dreaded blanket weed. We had to stop twice to clear the prop and eventually made it to lock 25 where we are moored for the night.Read more

Weather turned wet so we stayed for half a day. Bit of a run down place although it has some nice old buildings. Long walk from the canal but a great pub

  • Thrapston

    August 9, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Andrew met a man called Mike that he had worked with in South Africa moored in the boat behind us!! It was a lovely sunny day and we were able to share locks with another boat. Two of the people on board were lovely but the older man was a right miserable git.
We tried to moor in Islip but it was full and we had a very difficult manoeuvre to get out again to moor further on where we squeezed in between 2 other boats.
Met up again with Mike and his wife Steph for a drink then back for nightcaps on the back deck.

An idyllic but very hot trip from Thrapston. Steve left early and his buses all arrived to get him back to Northampton for his trains back home. It was lovely to have him and Sally with us.
We had another couple of locks with wheels to lift the gates which were very hard work. Moored on an unofficial mooring in Oundle and visited the zone e breweryRead more

  • Fotheringhay diesel disaster

    August 13, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 22 °C

As we started to leave the mooring the engine spluttered and ran out of fuel. Andrew walked to a garage a couple of miles away and brought back 5 litres. We limped on then to a spot with a shorter walk to the garage and purchased another can and 10 litres. Then on to moor at Elton LockRead more

    August 19, 2023 in England ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

Ellie and Colm arrived at 11.15 and we walked into town for a coffee.
Set off and through one lock. I was worried about the vibration of the boat but we pressed on anyway until there was a terrifying knocking noise and we couldn’t continue. It was also pretty windy so we blew over to the side and managed to get a plank out. CaRead more

  • Soporific day

    August 20, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Andrew phoned several engineers to come and do a permanent repair for us and hopefully have one coming tomorrow. I had a nasty spider bite on my foot on Saturday that had swollen up a lot. Jonathan gave me some antihistamine to take yesterday and can’t keep awake today!Read more

  • Rescued and back to Oundle

    August 20, 2023 in England ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

RCR kept their word and turned up at 9.45. The engineer diagnosed a damaged coupling with bolts missing. He was able to patch us back up and we made it back to Oundle Cruising Club who have very kindly said we can stay for a bit.
Sharon and Jonathan popped in to see us on the way back from a wedding in Nottingham and was lovely to catch up with them again. Ellie and Colm left us to return to Manchester.
