Day 1. Istanbul

Arrived at 3pm at Spinel hotel in Sultanahmet. Hotel below main buzz of Old city in a bit of a dodgy area down the hill. So at first we thought we should move. But once we walked around we realized it was all fairly close and we settled down.
Of course Charne hurried us along to buy Turkish ice cream. The exchange rate has improved for us since our last trip. Last time it was R5 for 1 Turkish Lire, and now it's only R2.90. Bonus! So a Turkish ice cream cone cost 5 TL = R15. Best ice cream ever.
Then of course off to buy Donner kebab for Carmen and a vegetarian doner kebab for Charne.
In the evening Nardus and the girls found a rooftop restaurant, Turk Art Terrace restaurant, to eat the most amazing meal with a sunset view of Blue Mosque on one side, Bosphorus river, and Hagia Sophia on the other.
Nardus ate Ottoman style lamb Casserole. One of the best dishes ever.

Breakfast on the rooftop with gorgeous views. Typical menu of breads, olives, cheeses, watermelon, spring rolls, eggs etc.
Crossed the river by tram to go Vintage clothes shopping near Taksim. They ended up spending most of the day in other shops and got some stunning clothes and perfume, and some nice work clothes for Nardus. Didn’t even end up getting anything from the vintage store, but well worth the experience.

Turkish Baths

Turkish baths - girls went to ancient Turkish baths. Steam room on marble slabs for 30 minutes. You then are naked and given a full body scrub until your skin is flaking off in rolls. The Turkish ladies doing it alone strip down to only wearing their panties. They then foam wash you and pour water all over you in an open marble steam room, and then give you full body massage.Read more

Basilica Cisterna

Explored the underground water reserves - Basilica Cisterna. Water was brought 18km from the first regions by aquaducts and stored underground.
We dressed up as the Sultan and his harem :)

Walked through the old town and then found a stunning dinner spot at Harbour at Iskele restaurant
Meze platter the best so far, and the Yoghurt lamb kebab was probably the best food Carmen has ever had - fried baguette slices, smothered in garlic yoghurt, with sliced roast lamb and a tomato /red pepper sauce on top.Read more

Spent the morning swimming at our favourite beach, in Antalya. Cost us 20 Turkish Lire each (R60) access to the beach for the day. We came here 3 years ago and made sure that we returned this holiday.

Dinner at Cinarlar restaurant in Kas

This town is gorgeous. We loved Antalya until we came to Kas! Magical town with cobblestone streets, so many funky, arty restaurants great vibe.
We had a lovely dinner at Cinarlar, which was made better by the great family that runs the place. Made us feel like we were the most important people there. Gave us an amazing free starter of Meze platter, balloon bread and mushrooms.
Then Charne ate vegetarian Casserole, Carmen chicken with pomegranate sauce, Nardus chicken with mushrooms and almonds. Great food!Read more

Charne and Nardus went mongoosing while Carmen and Debbie relaxed by the pool and read.
Then we all went swimming in the sea at Cinarlar Beach right next to the hotel. This beach is one of the most gorgeous ever. Tiny private entrance leading to clear green waters.Read more

The most gorgeous setting. A must do for drinks at sunset. Food was nice but not outstanding. But the setting overlooking the sea is worth it.

Little village famous for grapes. stopped for pancakes with Feta or with spinach and mint. Grapes here grown with thick skins that you don't eat. They last for 6 months. Best olives brown here too.
