Ernie's Tavern, Bowling Alley & Ice Crea

    January 9 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Off the chart, out of this world find. And the Ernie's sign came from Indiana ( New Albany I think). It's in Bloomfield KY.

It has old slot machines, fortune tellers, roulette wheels, phot booth, it just goes on and on. The restraunt used to be the local skating rink. It's owned by a wealthy Hollywood director and his wife who live in the area and support the town. There must be $100,000 worth of signs in the place alone. It was slow, I was the only one in there at lunch. They say it is usually slow for the most part so I guess it's not on the tourist route. Winner winner chicken dinner is all I can say.Read more

  • Majestic Cavern

    March 23 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We checked out the kiddies attractions and the gift shop while waiting for the tour to start.

The tour was ok. It featured a laser light show at the end that was disappointing. Rather than just highlighting the cave, they did a full blown Easter story. No way to opt out. To pay for the experience, and then be trapped was disappointing.Read more

  • Jesse Owens Museum

    March 24 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Unexpected side trip. We really wanted a place just to stop and a get a pop from the back of Pickles. But we thought we would give the place a try, figuring that anyone who had pissed off Hitler was worth taking a closer look. And boy oh boy was it worth it!

The documentary shown, narrated by Owens himself, recounted those August days in 1936 when Hitler's theory of white supremacy was proved false. The most jarring aspect was the opening ceremony. As the flame passed Hitler on the way to the cauldron, Handel's Messiah was being played. It was difficult even 90 years later to hear "King of kings and lord of lords" referencing an earthly dictator.

    March 24 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Rick was not as familiar with Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan's story, making to tour a little less enjoyable. Time to watch The Miracle Worker! Our docent did tell a story about a visit to the home fron Steven Tyler of Aerosmith fame. He did a version of amazing Grace on the old family organ.Read more
