  • Day zero travel day

    October 28, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

After a 5am start, it was on the bus from Bendigo to Tullamarine. Arrived on time at 8 am, thanks Brian.
Susan arrived by taxi shortly after, and we checked our luggage- 2hour delay! Have a coffee on the airline thx 😊
Did some puzzles and talked away some time.

Flight was good to Ho Chi Min - just long, arriving there at 10pm Melbourne time 6pm local time.
Transfer to next flight with short wait for plane to Siem Reap. Arriving there at 9pm local time.
Visa's didn't want to work, so after help from immigration assisting with the online process. Paid and through customs and onto our TripADeal group bus to the Hotel, another hour away. Our guide is Kong, very nice and chatty.
Susan was off the bus very quickly, and I was close behind - I just needed a bed. It was close to 2am Melbourne time, so I was buggered and just wanted to hit the hay.
    Day zero done and dusted.

  • Land mine museum

    October 29, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

It's interesting to visit and understand what happened here. There are still over 100 million land mines all over the world.
In Cambodia, over 45000 victims, and every month, 100+ still die from landmines.
Akira was 10 years old when the Khmer Rouge trained him to lay them. The Khmer Rouge killed both his parents, and he had no choice.
He is now clearing landmines in Cambodia, of which he says there are over 3 million still active.

After the gorgeous sunrise, we were heading onto the Tonle Sap River from the Tonle Sap Lake. Lots of villages and children along the banks. It is school holidays here, so they are at home helping with all the day to day chores. We had our safety drill before lunch, and all looked fabulous in our life jackets.Read more

Our excursions today was past Kampong Chhnang village, and the whole village is organised around fishing since French colonization.

We went by mini bus to a small village famous for its utilitarian pottery. We met the village elder, who at 72 still climbs palm trees 6 times a day to collect the palm sap for making wine and sugar.
We stopped at the market where I tried the crickets (delicious) before getting back on the ship for our journey to continue down river.

This morning, we had an adventure going by Tuk Tuk to a temple to be blessed, yes, twice in one week! Pur return to ship was by bullock cart. It's very bumpy and not great for your back. Was already hot at 8:30am. Everyone starts their work day at 6:30am and finish by 3:00pm due to the heat.Read more

Following our bullock ride, we were back on board for a short trip down river to a silversmith village. It was hot and hotter! Bought a couple of lovely bracelets for my girls.
This is the only place so far we kept getting accosted by ladies wanting to sell merchandise. Our guide advised us to ignore them, which we did. We had some treats for the children, though. They were at the ship this morning, followed us to the temple, and lo and behold were at the second village waiting for us again!Read more

  • Royal Palace Phnom Penh

    November 2, 2024 in Cambodia ⋅ 🌩️ 28 °C

Arrived at the place about 8:30am and once we got off the bus I had a stumble over a discreet hole in the grass. Landing was soft, so there was no damage. There were a lot of people there, and we were lucky to see some student monks who were happy to have their photo taken. It was very hot again, and we found the shade as much as possible. I wore my new scarfe, which was the best thing. Kept me cool and the sun off my head and neck.Read more
