    Perth and then home

    Jeanette took me in to see Optus Stadium Sunday morning, another WOW what a wonderful facility and the wonderful areas created around the stadium. Right on the Swan River, special ferry docking areas for easy drop off, rail stations just across the concourse and then the pedestrian bridge that connects the city to it. Well done Perth.
    Then sadly I had to leave. Just like Tasmania I had a ball, laughed lots every day, made the most of every day, thanks to my special travel buddy J.
    Uneventful flight arriving at 5.35 this morning then the drive home.

    Up and out for an early morning walk around the streets and then along the boardwalk and marina. A trip to the car wash to get the worst of the red dirt, bugs etc off Jeanette’s car before getting home to give it a better clean, poor car!! She went where she had never been before!!! Amazing the nooks & crannies that the red dirt made its way into.
    Then lunch down at the marina with a friend of Jeanette’s, so vibrant I could have sat there all day.    Lue lisää

    Dongara to Perth

    Oh dear, the long road home, our last day travelling.
    Stopped in to Sandy Bay, such beautiful beaches.
    Then to Wedge where there are lots of ‘squatters’ reminded me of the 7 squatter Bach’s at Waihi Beach although these were a little worse for wear. Had our lunch on the beach and just took all the beauty on board.
    Home to Jeanette’s for a lovely dinner and me subjected to Aussie Rules, stupid game!!!    Lue lisää

    Heading South

    Sadly we had to leave Denham, met some wonderful people and just loved the place. Headed out saying we hadn’t seen Emus with their chicks, next corner, whoa, and there they were WOW (my new word).
    Thought we would head inland to find more wildflowers, different scenery altogether. Went to a small place called Pindar and found Wreath flowers, so beautiful, glad we did the detour. We headed back to Dongara to meet up with Bruno & Gabi just in time to see the sunset on the beach. Both staying at the same place Jeanette and I stayed last week .
    Lovely dinner at the local pub then back to our unit for more drinks!!! A good night.    Lue lisää

    Francois Peron National Park

    Picked up at 8.30 and off in a Landcruiser for a full day.
    Only 4WD vehicles allowed in the park as it is mostly sand, even have to deflate the tyres before we start. First stop Gregories, WOW amazing scenery and such an informative guy. We learnt about bush survival and the history of the land. We stopped at Skipjack Point for lunch and watched turtles, sharks and dugongs, another WOW. Our guide Harvey stopped to pick up a Bobtail lizard and decided to take the ticks off him so I held the lizard while he did it, cute little fellow until he nearly bit my finger off, fortunately no swear words were said!!
    We also watched the dolphins herd fish into shore and then catch them, great sight. Wonderful day, getting back at 7pm, knackered from all the walking in soft sand and the bouncing around.    Lue lisää

    Denham-Lazy Day

    Lazy day today, went over to Monkey Mia to see the dolphins on the shoreline. They come in every morning to be fed but usually hang around until midday. Lovely to see the calves.
    Went to Little Lagoon and walked out to the estuary, lovely spot. Then on to Eagle Bluff to see sharks and sting rays in the beautiful clear water. Stunning walk around the cliff edge.
    Went to Whalebone Bay and had lunch on the cliff too watching the sting rays basking in the sun.
    Had nibbles overlooking the sea then went to the local pub for a superb kangaroo dinner.
    Not a bad day after all🤪🍷    Lue lisää

    Boat trip to Dirk Hartog Island

    On the boat out to Dirk Hartog Island at 8am. 12 people, skipper and his offsider. Perfect weather. What a place, too special to describe. Water amazing, flat calm, looking forward to our adventure.
    Hopped into 4WD vehicle with ‘offsider Jono at the wheel’. WOW what a trip to Shark Bay over sand dunes on very rough terrain, Adrenalin pumping!!!
    The bay had hundreds of baby shark (lemon fish) only about 2 metres from the shore, such an amazing sight with beautiful clear water. Then on to the blow hole, again WOW, 45 metre cliff with the water spout reaching another 30 to 40 metres. Our two guides said it was three years since they had seen it like this.
    Back to the old homestead for scones, jam and cream before the 50 min boat trip back. Surely it can’t get get better than this. BUT we saw dolphins, turtles and three Dugong’s and their calves, so special. Off boat, then to the Ocean Aquarian, informative.
    Calamari dinner, now bed, knackered.    Lue lisää

    Boat trip to Dirk Hartog Island

    On the boat out to Dirk Hartog Island at 8am. 12 people, skipper and his offsider. Perfect weather. What a place, too special to describe. Water amazing, flat calm, looking forward to our adventure.

    Kalbarri to Denham

    Left our wonderful accommodation yesterday morning for the nearly 380km trip to Denham. Stopped for fuel and lunch at Billabong. Weird to say the least, out in the middle of nowhere two gas stations/ roadhouse next to one another, one with fuel 5 cents dearer than the other, a ‘no brainer’. Best thing was a group of motorcyclists, all women, sat and had lunch in among them, what a hoot. A great bunch of ladies🥴🥴🥴having a long weekend break.
    Then on to see the Stromatolites, very interesting going back about 3000 years. Called in to Shell beach, not one grain of sand, all very small shells. Funny that.
    Then to Denham, accommodation across the road from the beach.    Lue lisää

    Kalbarri National Park

    Up early this morning and out to the park for what I thought was a 7.2km walk. I was right J was trying to kill me, it was a 9km walk. Only one word ‘stunning’. We were early birds, no one else there when we set off, only about 10,000 flies!!! Emus & Kangaroos on the way to the park. We did the Loop Trail, Class 4 and it lived up to its class, challenging at times and hot towards the end but well worth it. Some difficult terrain.
    Took us 4 hours but we stopped for something to eat and drink and of course I had to stop at times. Phew, we did it.
    On the way home we saw a Bungarra, a rather large lizard, about 1.5 - 1.8 metres. So fascinating and huge. Home for lunch and rest then drove out to the Natural Bridge on the coast and the Blue Holes, then I was too knackered to do anything else.    Lue lisää

    Kalbarri

    Because we couldn’t have Emu burgers last night we went to the local pub, fish & prawns great, only thing was I had to endure Aussie Rules semi final, what a stupid game!!! And to add ‘insult to injury’ Jeanette tried to kill me today, she took me to the Kalbarri National Park to show me Nature’s Window which was stunning, overlooking the Murchison River. I then had to do a 3.8Km walk down to the river for lunch over rocks, large boulders, ladders and narrow ravines, man are my legs like jelly and she just tells me we are doing a 9km walk tomorrow.
    Whew!!
    Before we left this morning we went across to the beach were the pelicans get fed, locals have been doing this for 40 years. We were lucky today because apart from the pelicans we saw a kangaroo (yawn yawn) then a Thorny Devil, a weird looking reptile. When we arrived home for a well deserved wine we had a long tailed lizard on our deck.
    Steak on the barbie and then I had to endure the other semi Aussie Rules, even worse than last night. Hopefully I survive tomorrow to write another blog.!!!!    Lue lisää

    Forgot to say, we nearly had Emu burgers yesterday. Driving out of the park two Emus were running along side of us and were about to cross the road when a car passed us so they took off down the bank, too fast for us to take photos. Then we saw an Echidna crossing the road, could have had nibbles!!🤣🤣Lue lisää

    Dongara to Kalbarri

    Sad to leave our villa this morning but WOW our accommodation tonight is something else. Called into Geraldton, a rather large but beautiful town. Tauranga could take some waterfront lessons!!! Visited the small beach resort of Horrocks, so nice then lunch by the water at Port Gregory. Pink Lakes came next, incredible, photos don’t do it justice. Then on to Lucky Beach, like a DOC reserve, eco friendly but not the roads of sand and dirt🥴🥴Saw a ‘blue tongued lizard on the road🦎. Arrived at our accommodation in Kalbarri and again WOW, across the road from the beach and sheer luxury. Even a complimentary bottle of wine

    Wildflowers

    Yesterday we headed inland and climbed to the lookout on Mingenew Hill to take in the amazing views of the countryside, mostly growing wheat and canola before driving to the Coalseam Conservation Park to see the wildflowers, we stopped at several lookouts on the Irwin River before doing a loop walk of 3.2kms on the ridge.
    Back late afternoon to join in Happy Hour with other travellers and management on the beach to watch the sunset. Fire roaring, lots of laughs (just like during the day) drinks and nibbles, ending the night with Pizza. Another great day.🤣🤣🤪🤪    Lue lisää

    Dongara

    Started off yesterday walking out on the beach and boardwalk and then walked into town to do the 4 km Dongara Heritage Walk taking in 28 heritage sites some of which are now private homes. We stopped at the local pub, built in 1867, for lunch, so good we had to go back for dinner which was great. Lovely accommodation and a great beach.Lue lisää
