    This might be called the Mayan Pompeii. This is a small settlement buried under ash from several volcanic eruptions. Unlike Pompeii, there are no bodies. So it seems safe to guess that they had enough warning to be able to get away.
    This is still an active dig as more is being uncovered, and certain restoration work is being done to protect the structures. A fascinating look at Mayan life away from the big ceremonial sites
