    Cousin Island

    January 10, 2022 on the Seychelles ⋅ 🌧 27 °C

Cousin Island is a nature preserve today. Formerly it had been used as a coconut plantation. Once the young coconuts trees were removed, the native vegetation reestablished, saving some endemic bird species from extinction. In addition to the island, 400 meters of ocean out from the shore is preserved for the coral.
The 1st picture is of the island which is only about 70 acres. The 2nd picture shows the native forest, and the 3rd picture is of a banyan tree.
The preserve on the island is primarily for birds. We saw so many species, and I'm not a birder, so I don't recall all the names. I can say that there are no land predators on the island. That is why the juvenile in the last picture is sitting on the ground, hidden from the raptors that may be flying above.
