The village of Al Yanfa is built on a mountainside not far from Abha (see another post). The village is unique in that it sits on top of a network of tunnels. Each building has at least one access door into the warren of tunnels.
The village has not been restored, and unlike many historic sites, some of the homes are still occupied. The pictures show both some buildings and some tunnels as they currently exist.
You may notice that some of the buildings have rows of flat stones protruding from the walls. These serve to keep rain off the mud brick walls, protecting them from falling apart in wet weather.Read more
