  • Turpan

    June 18, 2019 in China ⋅ ⛅ 37 °C

Lowest and hottest city in China. Second lowest point in the world. Temps over 100°F. An oasis city on the silk road, located on the Uyghur Autonomous Zone. The first pic is of the Emin minaret and mosque, while the next is inside the mosque. This is the tallest minaret hereabouts. The next 2 pics are of the kazar system of tunnels and shafts that direct water to enhance and supply the oasis. There about 5,000 km of tunnels. The last two are of the remains of the ancient Yar City that sits on a high island surrounded by rivers. In among the remains, temps had the be had to be pushing 120°F.Read more

  • Heavenly Lake

    June 20, 2019 in China ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Near Urumqi, the largest city in the Uyghur Zone. This is a beautiful Alpine lake in the mountains at almost 2,000 meters. Great scenery, even though we were there in a low overcast with many mountaintops in cloud. The pictures are various views of the lake and scenery. The last pic is a raptor over the lake.Read more

  • Kashgar

    June 24, 2019 in China ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Perhaps the heart of the Uyghur Autonomous Region. The old city is interesting. Much central Asia architecture, not Chinese. The first pic is the restored city gate. Next is the main mosque, followed by a couple off at street scenes in the old city. Fifth is a picture of the very old city, now abandoned due to unsafe conditions. It was probably damaged in an earthquake, but it gives a sense of the way Kashgar looked "once upon a time." The last picture is of the Kashgar Grand Bazaar.Read more

  • Shipton's Arch

    June 26, 2019 in China ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

One of the largest natural stone arches in the world between Kashgar and the border with Kyrgyzstan. The first two pics are of the arch as it is so high I couldn't get it in one picture. Third is the first view of the arch from the path up the mountain to reach it. Next are pics of the path leading up to the arch as it winds through a narrow canyon up the mountain.Read more

  • Caravansarai

    June 28, 2019 in Kyrgyzstan ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

A caravansarai is where caravans stopped for overnight accommodation. This one at Tash Rabat is restored. This is one of the largest remaining in Kyrgyzstan, and is an example of the roofed type. Unroofed ones are more typically urban, we were told.
The 1st pic is the building in the morning sun. 2nd is the entry tunnel taken from just inside the gate in the first picture. Next is the central room under the dome. 4th is a sleeping chamber with the raised area on one side for side-by-side bedrolls. 5th looks through a series of interconnected chambers. Last is a picture of an architectural detail that was unique in this room.
