    The capital of Kyrgyzstan. The first pic is a war memorial from WW2.. Next is the Opera House famous for the mix of Soviet and Kyrgyz architecture. Then the parliament building, the government executive building, the changing of the guard on the main square, and one of the many parks around the city. Bishkek is known as the greenest capital of all the former Soviet states.Read more

    The remains of a major trading center on the northern branch of the silk road. The minaret is restored but only to 25 meters. The original was over 40 meters.   • Goat Polo

    A traditional Kyrgyz sport played on horseback, where a beheaded goat is used. The goal is to pick up the goat and carry it to the opposing goal. Horses are specially trained for this. The third pic shows the goat and gives a sense of the size of the animal. It is played regularly, with formal leagues and inter-village competition. The sport is even included in the nomad Olympics every couple years. And, no, I had never heard of those Olympics either.Read more

    Another beautiful spot in Kyrgyzstan. The first pic is the valley where we stayed. Second is a Russian army truck we used the get there over the worst road by far I have ever been on anywhere in world--2 hours for about 10 km. The rest look at the scenery.Read more

    A large valley not far from Issyk-Kul. The name means seven bulls. The first pic is of the formation that gives the valley it's name. Second is broken heart rock. The rest are of the scenery. The glacier covered mountain bus one of the many peaks over 5,000 meters in Kyrgyzstan.Read more

  • Eagle hunting

    Hunting with eagles is an ancient tradition in central Asia. I'm holding a golden eagle trained for hunting by the man in the second and third pictures. In the 4th the eagle is up on the ridge for a demonstration of hunting. The last two are the best I could get of the eagle in action.Read more

  • Yurt building

    This a visit to a workshop where the wooden frames for traditional Kyrgyz yurts are handmade by a family that has been doing this for generations. Starting from pieces if Willow, they are cut, steamed, and bent to shape and finished by shaping and painting.. The top piece is the circle in the 4th pic. This design is purely Kyrgyz. The last two pics show how the yurt is put up. The sides are a collapsible lattice, placed in sections and tied together. The roof is supported by the long posts fitted into holes in the top ring and tied to the walls. The holes in the top ring are burned in by a square iron, and the poles have square shaped ends so that the construction is more stable. The yurt is then covered with felt.Read more

  • Kochkor--felt making at Altyn-Kol

    The traditional process for rug making. Cleaning the wool. Cutting the wool. Making a design. Setting the design with hot water and pressing by foot. Then elbow pressing. Finally, the "rug" with the design. For a larger rug, the process can take days or even weeks for one large rug. The final product is beautiful.Read more
