    Sedona

    May 10, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

I suspect that I will get repetitive with the scenery in this part of the country. Sedona is located in the red rock country between Phoenix and Flagstaff. The 1st 4 pictures give a look at all that. The last 2 pictures are of the Chapel of the Holy Cross. The 5th picture was sent by a friend who told me it was downloaded from Facebook, but I don't have the arrest. If someone knows who gets credit for this picture, I'll make the correction. The last picture is inside the Chapel.
I don't have any pictures of the downtown as most of what I saw was galleries and tourism businesses. This is not to denigrate the arts community and new age spirituality here. It's just a comment on what I actually saw.

  • San Xavier del Bac

    May 11, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Located near Tucson, this is the only Spanish mission remaining in Arizona. The mission was founded in the late 17th century, while the current building was begun in the late 18th century. This is still a working church, not a museum.
The 1st picture is outside. The next 2 pictures are in the sanctuary. 4th is the baptistery. The last 2 look at a couple gardens surrounding the mission.

  • Grand Canyon

    May 13, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

For my first post within the continental US, I figure it needs to be something grand. 😁
OK, puns aside, this is my 1st visit here, and this is another place where pictures do not come close to the real thing. There isn't much I need to say. The pictures say it all.
I just note that the 1st picture looks down on the Colorado River. The canyon is much too vast to catch in the remaining 5 pictures.

  • Zion Canyon

    May 14, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

One of the spectacular national parks in Utah. This is a narrow slot canyon created by the Virgin River, eroding the sedimentary rock layers. The canyon keeps getting narrower until the only trail is in the water.
The pictures give a wee sense of the place because, like so many places, ya gotta be there to really get what Zion Canyon is.

  • Bryce Canyon

    May 15, 2021 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Another of the beautiful parks in Utah. This is not truly a canyon. It is the edge of a plateau. What's special are the hoodoos. These are the wild and crazy rock formations that are quite unique here. Like at Zion, the structures are created by erosion. Unlike Zion, they are not created by riverine erosion. The hoidois form from freeze/thaw cycles and wind erosion.
Also like nearby Zion, pictures don't do it justice.
