  • Christiania

    July 1, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Unique area adjacent to Christiantown. The folks there consider themselves a free town, but Copenhagen and Denmark have not agreed. It is a place where a certain herb us openly sold. And no pictures are allowed on the main street, locally known as Pusher Street. There is a slot of street art. Families live there. And there is a small lake. The land us an abandoned military base. The community began as squatters.Read more

  • Paper Island

    July 1, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

A redeveloped area across the harbor from downtown Copenhagen. There is a contemporary art facility there. But for me, the main attraction is the renovated warehouse (At least that's what it seems like). It is now a warren of street food stalls. I had Moroccan braised lamb that was wonderful. It was a hard choice. Another that looked good was pulled duck. Think pulled pork, but using duck. There was even a surf n turf burger. I'll be back there before I leave here at least once. Just a couple photos to give you a sense.Read more

  • Kronborg

    July 2, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Aka Elsinore--the site of Hamlet, the castle is well restored, and they enact a play based on Shakespeare. Well done. Some pictures are included. First picture is kronborg. Second picture is Polionius (Ophelia's father), king and queen in the Kong's chamber . Third pictures is Hamlet and Ophelia in the queens gallery as Hamlet says "get thee to a nunnery." In the fourth, meet Yorick. In the fifth, Hamlet doesn't kill the king at prayer in the great hall. The whole thing is well done, reflecting both Shakespeare and castle life of the time.Read more

  • Roskilde cathedral I

    July 3, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

UNESCO World Heritage Site. Much to much here to share in 6 pictures. One of the steeples has stars with a face in the center--seems unusual for a church. Also pictures of the have from opposite ends, the altar piece and the King's door.Read more

  • Viking Ship Museum

    July 3, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

5 excavated ships from about 1,000 CE and an active museum of Viking sailing life. The pictures show a replica ship, a small ship under way with me as sheet man (emphasis on the double e), a black smith (as an exampke of one of mamy crafts) and two of the excavated ships.Read more

  • Malmo

    July 4, 2017 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

The Turning Torso, as this building is called, has become a symbol for Malmo. It is a design that better handles the extreme winds. The Griffin in the other picture is a symbol for Malmo.
Malmo is a nice small city--multicultural, friendly, no troubles.Read more

  • Christianborg Castle II

    July 6, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Seat of Danish government. Some of the royal reception rooms--the great hall and some of the tapestries; looking down the long hall to the thrones and the thrones themselves; the dining room for intimate dinner parties of 50; the queen' s library.Read more

  • Aarhus theater

    July 8, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

The theater is across the plaza from the cathedral. Built in the early 1900s, the church fought against allowing a play house to be built so close to the important church. Take a close look at the peak of the theater's roof. The theater folks thought it fun to have a devil perched there keeping an eye on the church.Read more

  • The Church of Our Lady

    July 8, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

The second most important church in Aarhus. It was a monastery before the reformation. Notice the altar is 3D. Also notice the crypt and the unusual crucifix found there. It looks a bit like a Norse god. And last is the old chapter room from the monastery. Used now as a chapel, mostly by the Orthodox church locallyRead more

  • Aarhus, around town

    July 8, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

Street art. If you can't see it, the chimney is the eraser. Also, the oldest street in the city, mid 16th century. Aarhus has a street food venue like Copenhagen and it is much the same, although smaller. DOKK1 is the new library and community center--nice architecture, even nicer inside. And part of the 2017 art exhibition, this being about the art of using food stuffs found along the beach.Read more

  • Moesgaard Museum

    July 9, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Extraordinary museum of antgropology and culture. There is just too much in the amazing place to capture. There is a lot of archaeology from the bronze and iron ages. After the picture of the building is a well preserved body found in a big that is 2,000 years old. There are many exhibits and videos about wars, including the recreation of a pillaged farm house. Also the central staircase has our ancient ancestors represented, all the way back to Lucy. And there is an exhibit of an Australian aboriginal man, a Siberian woman and Stephen Hawking in conversation. They are all living people who recorded conversations. Finally the view from the roof which is a long, sloping natural grass surface.Read more

  • Where 2 seas meet

    July 10, 2017 in Denmark ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

The location isn't wrong. There is a spit of sand that extends out. This is where the North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet with waves and tides coming from two directions. Results in a pretty active sea and interesting sailing. Just right for Tom B. And I had feet in both seas. Plus some views of the land and sand dunes.Read more
