At the foot of the Dolomite peaks of Lavarela and Conturines, at 1,537 m above sea level, lies the charming little mountain village of San Cassiano. Along with a plethora of convivial and elegant restaurants, the village, which attracts an international clientele, offers a wide choice of accommodation, ranging from exclusive hotels, comfortable hostelries and holiday homes to family-run B&Bs and a camping site admidst pristine nature.

In summer, families and casual walkers enjoy strolling through the sunny Armentarola and Störes meadows, along the “Larch Trail” (sentiero dei larici) and the “Meditation Trail” (sentiero di meditazione). Those who prefer a longer hike will appreciate the spectacular trails in the Fanes-Senes-Braies Nature Park and up to the Lagazuoi Mountain.

The mountains all around San Cassiano are of great geological and historical interest. You can see several testimonies to the tragic history of the First World War all around the Lagazuoi Mountain. At the foot of the Conturines you can join a guided hike to the well-preserved cave dwelling of the prehistoric cave bear ‘ursus ladinicus’. The Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus, in the centre of the village, is dedicated to that same cave bear.
