Walked to the Rose Garden, great views of the city, had a yummy brunch, antipasto platter, breads and grilled porcini mushrooms and steak tartare! Found the Bern bears and they were true to form, one was playing, one was sleeping and the other swimming ;) We then walked around old town, to St Vincent's. Dad and Em went to check out the old prison and mum and Jess went to Paul Klee. Ventured back into town later for Thai...Read more

    September 29, 2017 in France ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Roman Arena, Van Gogh garden, wandering the streets. Fantastic town with history to rival the romans. Narrow cobblestone streets....Kids ordered at a cafe in French, well done, and we got what we thought they'd ordered :) Saw flamingoes and wild horses on the road to Saintes-Marie's-de-la-Mer, spiritual home to the gypsy's and famed for the 3 Mary's around the birth of Christianity.Read more

Great day in Carcassone, medieval castle with heaps of lolly shops and great food places. Had lunch in a more local restaurant with regional specialties. Vince had the cassoulet while I had the duck. Dinner was snail done in pesto with French bread, salad and cheese. Jess had three snails! Em painstakingly managed one :) Then we sang, David played the didgeridoo, we also listened to Xavier Rudd and fat Freddy' drop. Bit of home :)Read more

  • Walking through vineyards - Villegly

    October 1, 2017 in France ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Nice long walk through vineyards surround a small village near Villegly. Found an old church and chateau. Picked some grapes and munched on them as we walked, also picked wild lavender and thyme along the way. Back in Villegly we walked into town to the markets (which were just packing up) and played in the grounds of the castle/chateau. Had BBQ duck, potatoes and salad for dinner. Followed by an assortment of cheese and local wine.Read more

  • Chateau Chombard

    October 3, 2017 in France ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Called into a boutique, chocolatier on our way to the Chateau Chombard. Handcrafted chocolates from tea sets to sheep to life size cars! Em loved the choc 'water feature' and tried to rate the diff choc from around the world, Jess liked the creations hand made from choc. After the detour onto The chateau, a wonderful example of French architecture and extravagance. Built in the 1500's the chateau was used by royalty, government and even as a field hospital during the war. It was abandoned many times and has some colourful history attached. We loved the tapestries, soft fabric wall, cool spiral staircase and outside rooms.
Staying in Mer, nice little apt with some English stations on T V :)

  • Villers-Bretonneux to cousins

    October 4, 2017 in France ⋅ 🌙 11 °C

Visited the war memorial. The village of Villers Bretonneux has a special relationship with Australia through war. The Australians fought to capture many of the towns, bridges, important vantage points all over this area of Northern France. Very moving, especially seeing graves of soldiers who were only in their teens.
Then on up to cuddles with Willem and Annabelle xx

  • Portumna

    October 8, 2017 in Ireland ⋅ 🌙 9 °C

Learnt a bit about the castle, went inside and checked out the grounds. Found a fantastic kitchen garden. We spent ages in here, sampling some of the fruits, playing in the maze and just waking around. Just beautiful. We then walked back into town, passed an old Abbey, checked out (and some old gravestones). Had lunch in a nice pub, then home where Hilary started dinner, using her rosemary from the castle garden.Read more
