TravelerI remember this from your pilgrimage 4 years ago. The Iron Age -- 1200-500 BC -- do they know what the people were doing at this site? Was it just a village?
TravelerWell,it's a hill fort so it definitely has a military cause as one of the fortified villages that emerged from the 5th century BC onwards in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula . They chose commanding hills to control the valleys, and even coastal peninsulas surrounded by the sea , enclosing their living space with stone walls and digging ditches that deterred any intruders. Castromaior is special because, situated at a moderate elevation, its inhabitants multiplied its defenses, eventually erecting six concentric lines. So it is a village but with military protection
