ПутешественникI love the shell mosaics. Allan, it wasn't until you took your first Camino pilgrimage that I made the connection between the shell Mike and I used during baptisms at both St. Andrew and Holy Trinity. I always just thought it was a helpful way to get a good amount of water onto the head of the baptized. (Mike probably always knew.) I knew baptism was your welcome to the Christian life, I never connected that we were welcoming the baptized into a pilgrimage. (Duh)

Cultural tour of Sarria before the walk

Today in the first day of light 5 km walk. Decided to take a tour of old Sarria.

ПутешественникWhat is that beautiful structure with all the wood and greenery? How old is "Old Sarria" -- it looks really ancient. The menu looks tasty, though.
ПутешественникIt is a wall of the building. I did not noticed any signs on the front.
ПутешественникSarria's history runs deeper than the Middle Ages. The area is rich in megalithic monuments, petroglyphs, and hill forts that date back to Roman and Neolithic times. The town itself was officially founded in the 12th century by King Alfonso IX of León, who actually passed away in Sarria in 1230 while on his own pilgrimage to Santiago (very 1st Pilgrimage hence that route is known as Camino Primitivo)

We made it to our Albergue of the day - Casa Barbadelo.
I stayed here 4 years ago and loved it so made sure we come here again and enjoy the hospitality.
ПутешественникOh wow! You are surrounded by beauty and antiquity everywhere you look. Was that pole a "trail marker" with the crucifix on top? What a cute man in the pool! You all look so happy.
ПутешественникIt's a very tough Pilgrimage when we walk 5 km total and come to Albergue with a pool 😉
ПутешественникThe poles are called "cruceiro(s)" and before yellow arrows they served as a waypoint markers of The Camino - old times Pilgrims went from one cruceiro to the next. The specific cruceiro located right next to Casa Barbadelo is a striking, historic stone cross that marks an important spiritual and traditional point on the Camino Francés in Barbadelo.
