Once more I am playing "catch up" to Laurie's European Business Trip.

    Zurich University Campus

    We took a short stroll on the Campus

    ETH Zurich (German: Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich; English: Federal Institute of Technology Zurich) is a public university in Zurich, Switzerland. Founded in 1854 with the stated mission to educate engineers and scientists, the university focuses primarily on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. ETH Zurich ranks among Europe's best universities.

    It was totally cool to spot the VW California Ocean, which, despite its looking like a regular van, is actually a mini camper with a popup roof, built-in kitchen, and 4 sleeping places.

    Suzanne Duchamp

    French Dadaist and painter Suzanne Duchamp (1889–1963), an important yet often overlooked figure in modern art. The artist left behind a diverse body of work.

    As the sister of Marcel Duchamp, she was closely associated with the avant-garde movements of her time and shaped art history with her own artistic language. Her works combine painting with poetry and experiment with a variety of media and materials. Many works have only been rediscovered through intensive research or are even being exhibited for the first time.

    Old and New Masters

    Interestingly enough, we found some works by known artists that we had no idea of previously.
    Thinking on it, we concluded that it only makes sense that places of the caliber of The Louvre, The Ermitage, Ufizzi Galery, etc. would have the means and/or patronage to aquire the "greatest" works , hence leaving the lesser known works to places like Kunsthaus, Prado, Tate & MOMA, to name a few.

    So here are some works we found interesting, starting with Chagall's "Birth," which Laurie found quite graphic.

    In the "Christ Carrying the Cross," we were blown away by the presence of the Phillips head screws

    And apparently, Vincent didn't paint just irises and sunflowers.

    If you look at the Muses, perhaps even blow that shot up a little , the most right bottom one reminds me of Uncle Adolf 😬

    Finally, there's Autoportait of Alberto Giacometti, a Swiss sculptor, painter, draftsman, and printmaker, who was one of the most important sculptors of the XXth century. His uncle, Augusto Giacometti, was a Swiss painter who did the altar piece at Grossmünster    Baca lagi

    Modern Art and controversy

    We moved to another wing, where a more modern art, incl. Laurie's fave Impressionalists live. Of corse, in a lot of ways, I'm not a fan ( see enclosed Joan Miro)... but there are Chagalls... and Monet's Waterloo Bridge that seems to be sporting a German U-Boat. 🙄

    The art piece in the video is cool, though.

    Speaking of Germans, we then moved into a section that is a part of quite a big controversy.

    The controversy concernes the integrated artworks from the collection of the arms dealer Emil Bührle, and it has caused discussion and criticism due to concern that some of the artworks may have been sold under duress by Jews persecuted by Nazis during the Third Reich.Critics say that the ownership history of the artworks has not been sufficiently clarified and, in January 2021, a petition was launched to demand access for impartial international researchers. In October 2023, a panel of academics hired to rectify incorrect or misleading Nazi-era provenances resigned in protest over the way the history was presented.

    You can get stuff on it by Googleing Buhrle and decide for yourself where would you stand

    I resolved myself to take just a few photos highlighting the most known work of art (that of Renoir). Needless to say, I was not aware of this story, the subject of Nazi looting itself being nothing new.

    I'd recommend watching "Woman in Gold" - a 2015 ‧ War/Drama movie starting the ever versatile Dame Helen Mirren to get some perspective on it.    Baca lagi

    And so, after spending 5.5 hours at The Kunsthaus, we returned to Amigos Tapas for some anticipated linner

    We are back at Polyterrasse to see the sunset and got here almost at 9:00 p.m.

    For the next 27 minutes, I am channeling Andy Warhol, taking multiple shots of the same area but applying different filters.

    Yeah.... Barcelona it is not... looked like by 10:00 p.m. lots of places on Limattquai were shutting down.
    So back to Amigos we went (Alejandro told us they are open til 11) and Laurie nightcapped herself with another mojito and I partook in my beloved radler (aka Panache in other parts of Europe).
    Alejandro personally made the drinks (waaaay too yummy 😋 😍)... and then compted us 🫢

    Boat

    This morning, we are off on a mini-cruise on Zurich Lake.
    The boat also acts as a ferry of a sort as it stops at numerous piers, and folks can get off and get on. As a tourist, if you have at least a 24-Hr Pass, you can hop on and off.

    Christkatholische Augustinerkirche

    The Church of the Augustinian Hermits was built in 1270 on the western city wall of Zurich. During the Reformation, the church was converted into a mint. It wasn't until 1841 that Zurich Catholics reclaimed it as a church. When the congregation rejected the dogmas of the First Vatican Council, it was excommunicated from the Catholic Church. From then on, it called itself the Christian Catholic Congregation. The Augustinian Church remained its place of worship.

    It received its present appearance during the renovation in 1959. Worth seeing are the simply designed choir, the crucifixion group, the block altar and baptismal font by Franz Fischer, as well as the stained glass windows by August Wanner.

    Another day of heat wave.
    Both of us were hot and really didn't feel like trudging up the hill to go back to apartment for just a few hours before coming back down for dinner, but at the same time any further exploration of Zurich were out of question.
    So we decided to have an early linner and simply retire for the day

    We went with German/Swiss cuisine

    En guete" is a Swiss-German phrase that means "Enjoy your meal!" or "Have a good meal!". It's the Swiss-German equivalent of the French "Bon appétit".

    Guten Morgen, Viet.... Zurich

    So for the last couple of mornings I've been going to a corner bakery for our fresh bread and croissants (trying different ones each day; while the bread gets dispatched with at breakfast, the croissants wait until mid day break).
    This morning, I also decided to visit a small grocery shop for some fruit and tomatoes but walked up to that before the opening time.
    So I just turned onto one of the side streets, figuring I'll do more leisurely stroll, and hit upon all these beautiful buildings

    Breakfast consisted of more new things to try:

    From Pre-historic to domestic settlement

    The way the museum works is very cool.
    The use of technology is everywhere
    You can see the large tablet-type screens that attached to the exhibit case.
    They glide the width of the case, showing the items inside the case and you can "zoom on" on the particular item in the case proper, tap the screen and more detailed information on the item pops up.
    Then there is a room with a large screen and a number of spots on the floor that show different aspects of human domestication.
    You step on the footsteps, and the appropriate image appears ( I'm highlighting wolves before we domesticated them into dogs)    Baca lagi

    The Middle Ages

    Moving into the Middle Ages, we are presented with an ornate hallway, a series of stained glass windows, and a small armory.
    Again, the info is available on the tablets and you can also notice the language options in the upper right corner- makes it a lot easier than trying to Saint and find "the right language " on a 4x6 card

    P.S. it's hard to take photos against glass cabinets. Some kind of reflection will be present like it or not

    The Royals Abroad

    Although the exhibition includes "Mad"King Ludwig II, Emperors Franz Josef I & Napoleon III (with his mother Queen Hortense de Beauharnais) Queen Astrid and The British Royals I highlighted The Empress Elizabeth, affectionately called "Sissi" by practically everyone. The wife of Franz Josef I, mother of Crown Prince Rudolf (think Mayerling Affair), beautiful and intelligent- she met untimely death on the embankment of Lake Geneva ( cannot BELIEVE I was like 100 yards away from the place last year ... and missed it 😪😡) from being stabbed by an Italian anarchist

    Yeah, and that file can rival Booth's Derringer

    I strongly recommend the Netfix series "Die Kaizerin" and, of course, there is 1968 "Mayerling" with Omar Sharif, Catherine Deneuve, James Mason and Ava Gardner as Sissi    Baca lagi
