If I only had Some Hair

After once making a fast all-day stop on our Alaska-CA cruise in 2006, we are now descending on the City of Hippies and Summer Love (albeit in the Winter)
And, as stated in the title - If I only had Some Hair I'd surely wear some flowers in it :)

  • Here we go loop dee loop

    1月10日, アメリカ ⋅ ☀️ 46 °F

Early morning is dedicated to joy riding the Cable cars.
I start off with Powell and Hyde line. It features the steepest climbs of any cable car route and takes about 30 minutes to ride end-to-end to Union Square. It offers some of the best scenic views, including glimpses of the Golden Gate Bridge and Lombard Street. Powell-Hyde line has now been in operation since 1957, it's historic in its own right.

    Up and down them hills.
The grip man does his stuff.
    The cable is underground.

  • The History of Fisherman's Wharf

    1月10日, アメリカ ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

Another group of about 8-10 folks are on Adam's tour to Ghirardelli Square and we are walking through Fisherman's Wharf.

Fisherman's Wharf evolved from a Gold Rush-era lumber port (Meiggs' Wharf) into a thriving Italian and Chinese immigrant fishing community by the early 1900s, famous for its Dungeness crab and Monterey clippers, before transforming into a major tourist hub by the mid-20th century.

Alioto-Lazio is one of the last family-owned and operated fishing companies in San Francisco. Here is a family member "torturing "a Dungeness crab for our sake ☹️
The original Cannry building is right across the street.
Originally built in 1907, it housed the canning operation for Del Monte in this region for 30 years. It was the largest canning location in the US for most of that time.
Aquatic Park Cove provides an opportunity for recreation in the urban space of San Francisco Matirime Naitonal Historical Park. The long arm of Municipal Pier protects the cove from the turbulence of the Bay water, providing a popular spot for swimmers and boaters. (It's hard to zoom in on the photo but there are folks swimming in it)

  • The Coastal Trail

    1月10日, アメリカ ⋅ ☁️ 55 °F

The California Coastal Trail is a 1,200-mile, route stretching along the Pacific coastline from Mexico to Oregon. The 2.7-mile San Francisco Presidio Park segment connects Baker Beach to the Golden Gate Bridge with expansive Pacific Ocean views along the way.

There are gun emplacements along the bluffs —like Battery Chamberlin (1904), Batteries Crosby (1900), Godfrey (1895), Boutelle (1900), Cranston (1897) and Lancaster (1898), that were part of a modernization of the nation’s seacoast defenses begun in 1885 by Secretary of War William Endicott.

  • Land Ends Trail

    1月10日, アメリカ ⋅ ⛅ 55 °F

Lands End is a park in San Francisco within the larger Golden Gate National Recreation Area. It is also the geographic name of a specific promontory next to the Pacific Ocean on the northwest side of the park.[1] The park is in large part a rocky and windswept shoreline at the mouth of the Golden Gate, situated between the Sutro District and Lincoln Park and abutting Fort Miley Military Reservation. Numerous hiking trails follow the former railbeds of the Ferries and Cliff House Railway along the cliffs and also down to the shore.

You can see the elevation profile on the 3rd photo.
Mile Rocks Lighthouse (completed in 1906); there are lots of shipwrecks in this area...
The USS San Francisco Memorial honors the crew of the WWII heavy cruiser USS San Francisco, particularly those lost in the Battle of Guadalcanal. The memorial features a battle-damaged section of the ship's bridge wings, unrepaired to show the heavy damage it sustained, and is oriented towards Guadalcanal.

Large Lookout area with newly built visitors center.

    Suthro Baths ruins.
The Sutro Baths were a massive, privately owned public saltwater swimming pool complex, built in 1896 by Adolph Sutro, featuring seven saltwater pools, slides, and museums, but closed in the 1960s due to high costs and burned down in 1966, leaving behind ruins that are now a popular historic landmark and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

  • A Soup, a Soup...

    1月10日, アメリカ ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

    A Kingdom for a Soup!!!
When you hike 4.1 miles and get pretty sweaty, and then the sun goes down and it gets chilly quite fast, nothing is more welcome than a nice bowl of soup.
Granted, I still had to deal with public transportation (which, BTW, is very good in San Francisco) to get myself back to Pier 39, but get to the Pier I did.
I supped at The Pier Market restaurant and had me a hearty hot Sourdough bowl of clam chowder along with Caesar salad topped with Dungeness crab.
My Golden State Cider was a bit "dressed up" but I didn't mind 😄
On a Saturday night The Pier was much more alive and crowded.
I even considered stopping for some crêpes but the line was quite long and in the end I decided to play it safe and return to the hotel and get myself out from the cold (I did have a plane flight back home next morning and didn't want any complications).
Thus ended final night in San Francisco
    Yup, no flowers, as advertised

  • All Good Things Must Pass

    1月11日, アメリカ ⋅ ☀️ 52 °F

Made it to the SFO with no issues and relaxed in the United Club before the flight.

About 10 hours later on the approach to PHL, the whole downtown was awash in green, and I hoped that the Igglz did win... alas 🥲

    And so ended this adventure
