  • Spy Cider House and Distillery

    10 sierpnia 2023, Kanada ⋅ 🌧 64 °F

Of course, not willing to believe such abomination, we moved on to the next place on the list... only to be told the same.
There was only one thing to do - be it that this place was a distillery, we had to drown our sorrows in flight samples of Hard Apple Cider

At least the rain pretty much stopped by the time we left

  • Harrison Park

    10 sierpnia 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Harrison Park is an urban dream, with more than 40 hectares of streams, trails, gardens, playgrounds, forest, and green space in the heart of Owen Sound.  Often called "our jewel in the crown," when it was turned over to the city a century ago by the family of founder John Harrison, it was deemed one of the most beautiful parks in Ontario.

So we abandoned the forlorn search for non-existent apples and took a drive there.

And of course, the trail to small waterfalls was closed "due to the damage," but also, of course, WE WILL STOP AT NOTHING! at least me... so here are the waterfalls 😁

The rain is completely gone by now, the sun is out, and the sky is beautiful blue

  • Harrison Park Redux

    11 sierpnia 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

Blessed with another gorgeous day, we drove back to Harrison Park.
Yesterday, we found out that there is another waterfall accessible from there, but it was slightly over 3km hike O\W, and we didn't have our hiking gear.
So today, we are setting out to conquer the Inglis Falls Trail

  • Falls area

    11 sierpnia 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Known as “the best waterfalls in the area”, one of three waterfalls that surround the City of Owen Sound, Inglis Falls is the best known and most visited. Situated in the heart of the 200-hectare Inglis Falls Conservation Area, Inglis Falls is an 18-metre high cascade created by the Sydenham River meeting the edge of the Niagara Escarpment. The erosive power of the water has carved a deep gorge at the base of the falls. On a clear day, you can see down the valley into the City of Owen Sound and out to the Owen Sound harbour. • Falls and History

    11 sierpnia 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 68 °F

Inglis Falls is rich in history – starting in 1843 when Peter Inglis immigrated to Canada and settled in this area. In 1845, Inglis purchased a small existing grist mill built two years previously by a Mr. Boyd, and 300 acres of deeded Crown land. It was in 1862 that Inglis replaced the old gristmill with a new four-storey mill that produced flour, bran, and shorts (feed for animals).

Other ventures of Inglis’ included building a sawmill a quarter of a mile downstream of the falls. Peter Inglis also built a woolen mill on the east side of the river on the brink of the falls. Here were manufactured tweeds, flannels, and “rainbow” blankets, so called because of the three coloured stripes at each end. The woollen mill was destroyed by fire around 1885 and rebuilt only to burn down again in 1901.

Management of the mill was passed on to Inglis’ oldest son, William A., in 1886. William’s son, Victor, managed the mill until 1932. Eighty-seven years of steady operation under the Inglis family name is an amazing record which very few industries in this area of the province can surpass or equal.

In 1932, the property was obtained by the City of Owen Sound for water rights. The mill was idle for two years, until purchased by Emil Henkel. He ran the mill until 1945 when a fire completely destroyed it. Today all that remains of that earlier industrial scene are the family home, a stone building, the silent millstones, and the enduring beauty of Inglis Falls.

  • Cheese Gallery

    11 sierpnia 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

We made a fast stop at a sleepy litte town\village called Thornbury, right on the coast of Georgian Bay. It is a prominent location on the Apple Pie Trail, the one we did yesterday, but somewhat ran out of time to come here.
There are 7 trail stops on the Apple Pie Trail in Thornbury, and we only happily visited one of them - The Cheese Gallery..and walked out with a little something to take back to the room 😀 😊

  • Cheese-cuterie

    11 sierpnia 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 70 °F

Since it's not a proper charcuterie without meats, we present to you our version of "cheesecuterie."
We nicely settled on our patio balcony, poured ourselves some brewsky, and eagerly sampled the goodies we just bought:
In the middle - Shepherd's Harvest, which is a sheep cheese local to Canada and very much reminiscent of our beloved Spanish Manchego.
Then we have 2 cow cheeses
A Kaamps Oranginal from Netherlands and Guinness Cheddar from Ireland.

Interestingly enough, we both loved the Oranginal

A local version of things Alpian with nod to Austria, Germany and Switzerland
But, hey, I got my hands on a Radler 😁
Laurie started off with a large salad, and I opted for (no its not a French Onion Soup) - Flädlesuppe: thin sliced savoury pancakes with fresh herbs in our homemade beef consomme.
We both had pan-seared Salmon, Laurie with spaetzle and I - with garlic mashed potatoes

  • Rainy day

    12 sierpnia 2023, Kanada ⋅ ⛅ 73 °F

    ...or not... or maybe....?
So this was supposed to be a total washout. All weather prognosis showed rain starting early morning and continuing through the day at about 80% at some point with possible strong thunderstorms.

There is really NOTHING TO DO in this area in case of bad weather. There are some local small museums in neighboring communities, but nothing that would interest us.

So we just decided to be lazy and stay in...slept a bit late.. and at around 8:00AM it was raining quite steadily, although not heavy. We had breakfast and just packed all the hiking clothes and gear as well as most of clothing - we are thinking of early morning departure tomorrow so getting stuff together as much as possible.

Within an hour or do it started getting lighter but Weather Channel was still insisting on bad weather even as % numbers dropped.
By 1pm it looked sunny... but by 2 it got a tad darker again and by 2:30 we started getting (gulp 🫨) TORNADO WARNINGS ⚠️
    Yet outside still looked bright....

So we dodge the bullet. The storms blew North of us right across the Bay, but apparently there WAS a tornado in the next county East of us... phew 😓

By 4:00PM it is completely over with the sun shining and the pool crowd is back.
We shall eat our dinner early and hope for a descend sleep before hitting the road tomorrow morning

Leaving the resort around 5:50AM, we decidedto take a small detour and visit The Falls.
Last time we were here was in 2017.
We were staying on the US side and jumped over the border at night to see The Falls all illuminated in their Glory.
This time we can enjoy viewing them in the morning

  • Fry Bros. Turkey Restaurant

    13 sierpnia 2023, Stany Zjednoczone ⋅ ⛅ 77 °F

Our stop for trip lunch was Fry Brothers Turkey Restorant in Steam Valley, right off US Rte 15.

I have to admit it sort of looked like a hole in the wall, but the parking lot was full, the food was yummily delish, and service top notch.

Laurie had a Turkey Club Sald served with sliced pickled beets and pickled eggs, and I chose Classic Turkey Club.
    Very large portions! 😋

After about an hour's rest, we hit the road again and successfully cast our lines at homeshore about 5:45PM, ending yet another chapter of LaurieAl Travels Around The World.
