    Anna-Seiler

    3. oktober 2023, Schweiz ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

The Anna-Seiler-Brunnen is a charming fountain located on Marktgasse in the Old City of Bern. This historical fountain, positioned at the upper end of Marktgasse, serves as a memorial to the founder of Bern's first hospital. Anna Seiler is depicted by a statue of a woman dressed in blue, gracefully pouring water into a small basin. She stands atop a pillar that was originally brought from the Roman town of Aventicum, modern-day Avenches.

Anna Seiler's significant contribution to the city dates back to 29 November 1354 when, through her will, she expressed her wish for the city to establish a hospital within her house, which still stands today on Zeughausgasse. This pioneering hospital began with just 13 beds and two attendants and was intended to be a perpetual institution. After Anna's passing around 1360, the hospital was renamed the Seilerin Spital in her honor.

Today, this historical institution has evolved into the modern Inselspital, boasting approximately 6,000 employees and providing medical care to around 220,000 individuals annually.
