Baltra (Base 3)

There were three thousand US marines stationed here during WWII to protect the Panama Canal from a Westward attack that never came. The airstrip is the same with lots of patching. We almost stepped on an iguana the size of a small dog as we walked to the terminal where we met the Islander II crew. Baltra is a local mis-pronunciation of “Base 3”, the American designation for the installation.Read more
