We board panga boats captained by locale fisherman from the back of the Venture and head out. On the way to see blue whales, we pass a colony of frigate birds, pelicans, and the odd heron.

While we eat dinner, we make our way to San Carlos where we will dock for the next two nights. We’ll be going to see blue whale calves in an area to the north, Boca de Soledad. It’s not an easy cruise, so tomorrow we will take a bus to Lopez Mateo where we’ get on pangas.Læs mere

Looking for baby whales

After a 2 hour bus ride to the interior, then north, then back out to the Puerto Lopez Mateo we find our panga and head out. But before we do, the town turns out: vendors, dancers, and we do not have to pay the 5 pesos to use the restroom. It’s a darker, overcast day and this makes seeing in the water more difficult. We see a lot of activity, but the mother whales are protective of their babies and it is difficult to get close. After a morning on the water, we head back to town for lunch and then back out on the pangas.Læs mere

When we get back to the Boca, the wind has picked up a little. We see a disturbance, several fins bending and twisting in the water. It’s three males trying to mate with a female. Blue whales are apparently open minded. One of the males turns belly up, and I bag the photo of a lifetime. The view is referred to by the guides as “Pink Floyd”.Læs mere

The End of the Voyage

We get on the bus and travel back to the Venture where dinner and the end of the cruise photo show are provided. I had to recreate the movie in iMovie in order to have the original music that the staff added. We say our goodbyes to the staff and have a final drink. Tomorrow will be a long bus ride back to the east coast at Loreto to catch a flight to Los Angeles and then on to Seattle. We learn in Los Angeles that it is a good idea to budget at least three hours from landing to catching the next flight, due to the delays in passing through customs.Læs mere
