    Start

    July 9, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

After several weeks of preparations, we have arrived at the time when we are ready for our home in Seattle to be placed on the market, an exhausting effort. Our idea was to give ourselves a break and a rest in the form of an adventure to “see” Vancouver Island, British Colombia, Canada. We started setting up lodgings and researching details in March 2024. We made posts for advice on the ORV Facebook page months before that and got several excellent tips and even an offer of “phone me so we can talk” from an islander.

The tricky parts were crossing the Canadian border and making the ferry trip from the mainland to the island.

  • Pick up the trailer

    July 9, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 75 °F

We made it up to Toy Garage where we store The Buen Camino. One difference this time picking up was that we left Peggy’s MDX at the parking spot because we are showing the house while we are gone. Loren’s Bolt is at Tim and Maria’s.Read more

  • Crossing the Border

    July 9, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

We arrived at the border and got in line…a slow line, but the furthest over to the right, but not the Nexus express line. When we made it to the border officer, it was pretty easy. We had nothing to declare, no fruits or vegetables, no guns or bear spray, showed our passports and the officer had to get out and read our trailer license plate. “Don’t want to allow a stolen trailer into Canada, eh?” We are officially in Canuckland.Read more

  • Waiting for the ferry

    July 9, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 77 °F

After clearing the border, we had plenty of time to make the ferry…..too much time. Advice from the ORV group suggested to wait at the Tsawassen Walmart. The Bass Pro shop had other trailers indicating more room, so we found a slot, had lunch and a napRead more

  • Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal

    July 9, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

We got to the terminal 1 minute early even driving really slow. They put us in line and gave us two red stickers to place on the closed propane tanks. We pulled into lane #4 and waited. Peggy to Olive for a walk…it was pretty hot. Then the announcement to prepare to board and then we boarded.Read more

  • Ferry to Duke Point Terminal VI, BC

    July 9, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

We had a hard time figuring out what to do with Olive. We couldn’t be on the #2 deck where the rig was. A crew member told us to find a spot on deck #3 which was the lower clearance deck for cars and trucks. We found a nook with a park bench and camped out. Loren went in search of dinner and came back with Steelhead and Caesar salad. It turned out to be a good thing because the top deck was exposed to the heat of the sun on a very hot day. In our little nook, there was a nice breeze and it was shaded.Read more

  • Living Forest RV Park.

    July 9, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

After departing the ferry it was a short hop over to Living Forest RV park. We planned this since we didn’t know how things would go on the ferry and it was a late crossing that we got on a Saver Fair. Set up camp and crashed. This is a very large RV park on an estuary near a log boom holding area. There’s lots of trees and most of the sites are well sheltered by bushes. Connects were great and easy.Read more

  • Nanaimo

    July 10, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

We went to the harbor. Loren had “ridden” in Nanaimo on the Peloton app and so we wanted to visit. Found a place to park the truck and walked around the waterfront. We had fish and chips for lunch and Loren had a Nanaimo Bar at the Nanaimo sign in Nanaimo! He got it from a food truck and the lady apologized for it being refrigerated, because it was a hot day and it would melt. Back to camp for a rest and then to the Country Market, which was an experience. Very well stocked, but mainly Canadian brands, especially with regard to dairy products. Steak for dinner let us try out the Volcano grill using the newly devised LP gas connections.Read more
