  • Dinner of offal!

    20. november 2015, Argentina ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

I demonstrated my Spanish skills on our first night in BA!

After traveling for 27 hours we went into the first restaurant/bar near our apartment. There was mear sizzling on a grill and people eating on a table near us. The menu was in Spanish and no one spoke English. No wifi. There was a list of individual items of meat on the menu and then what looked like a share plate. Using my powers of deduction, i thought 'what a good idea, what could go wrong' and ordered 2 serves.

Turns out it was a selection of lamb stewing chops (which were excellent), a chorizo sausage (which was very good) and various 'sweetmeats' and a black pudding (which were terrible!

Still, the local beer is good!

  • Day 1

    20. november 2015, Argentina ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

A very long day traveling - 27 hours elased time. All good, no missed flights etc.

Arrived in BA late afternoon and into the apartment in Recoleta early evening.

Apartment is very good, large and well equiped in a secure building. On the 8th floor with a balcony. AM found this through AirBnB.

As noted below, only problem was my choice of dinner.

  • Day 2

    21. november 2015, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    Full day organised by AM.

Bus and boat cruise to the Tigre Delta. Introduced to dulce con leche which is basically flavoured condensed milk! Coffee will never be the same!

Did a city tour in the afternoon. Useful to get our bearings. Highlight was the rough area of la Boca. Lots of colourful buildings. Is now done for tourists but was originally because people scrounged for paint and ended up with multiple colours!

Jacarandas and bouganvillia everywhere. Could easily be in Brisbane! Temerature is very similar.

I was having trouble finding a money changer so used a hotel. When i had finished changing at a rate of 12/1 he then gave us directions to the money changer who was offering 14/1.

We were all tired at the tango show and we each kept nodding off but it was very good.

    Markets tomorrow.

  • Day 3

    22. november 2015, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Managed to get a good night sleep!

Walked to the markets at San Telmo. Meant to be 4 km but I veered off track and it was closer to 6! Markets were good. Plenty of original art. Only problem was that being election day, pubs weren't selling alcohol!

In the evening, AM and I went to our first milonga at Salon Canning. Not too daunting but we didn't try dancing with the locals.

  • Day 4

    23. november 2015, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Visited BA's main cemetary today which is just down the road from the apartment we are staying in. The cemetary is all mausoleums. Eva Peron is entombed there (marked only by a simple plaque which is not ostentatious, unlike many others).

Found a good high class bbq restaurant for lunch - Parrilla Aires Criollos. Magnificent food (especially the steak) ang great service. Total cost $50pp including drinks.

Took the long way home to walk off lunch. We all had a siesta and AM stayed sleeping. Teresa and Brad spent most of the night trying to book a side trip to the Andes. As i type this at 11.30pm, they are still trying!

  • Day 5

    24. november 2015, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Up early to find Teresa and Brad hadn't yet been successful in booking a side trip to Mendoza and the Andes.

Left them to it and went to our first dancing lesson with Damian and Nancy. It was very good. They are lovely people and very easy to learn from. Set up in their apartment was very good with a big timber floor area.

Wandered around the area near their apartment and discovered it is full of outlet shops. Found a good leather shop and did some damage to the credit card!

After lunch (and after teaching a local cafe owner what Australians mean by iced coffee), we went to a tango shoe shop and got AM 2 pair of shoes.

Got onto wifi to discover Teresa and Brad had succeeded in booking their side trip.

We then went to check out a dance studio (bni) where I got a new pair of shoes also!

Back to the apartment for a quick change then off to a milonga and a lesson beforehand. The lesson was ok but difficult to follow the steps being taught as it was all in Spanish. 2 hour group lesson cost $7 each and included entry to the milonga afterwards. At that orice, not complaining about the Spanish!

The milonga was traditional in that, except for a few couples, the men sat on one side and the girls sat on the 2 adjacent sides.

The music was fine but we didn't dance as AM was breaking in a new pair of shoes.

  • Day 6

    25. november 2015, Argentina ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

    Another busy day!

We rushed out of the apartment at 9.30 (having slept in) to have another private tango lesson. It was very good again. We are discovering tango is like an onion, there are more and more layers!

Afterwards we had lunch, went for a long walk and then went to a group lesson in the afternoon (2 hours) which was being given by one of our teachers (which meant it was partly in English!).

In walking around the city we have realised they have kept many of the trees which really improves the look and feel of BA.

Our teacher, Damian, had given us the name of his tailor that he gets his tango pants from so we caught a taxi there after the class. I bought a couple of pre-made tango pants ($75 & $90). The tailor got my size right by just looking at me for about 2 seconds and the quality of the work was also obvious. So I decided to have a suit made also. After it was all measured up and the price agreed, I told him who had sent me. This resulted in a gift of another pair of tango pants, 2 polo shirts and 2 tango tops for AM! I assume Damian has a lot of clothes made by him.

We have discovered that taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap - most trips take about 20 minutes and cost about AUD$8-$9. They are easy to use if you have the address written down. We have used both radio cars and ordinary metered taxis without any problem. The city is fairly easy to navigate and we haven't felt like we were being taken the long way.

The other discovery of note is 'dulce con leche' which is like dark condensed milk. It is everywhere here, including being featured with deserts (see picture below!)

Dogs are a feature here with most streets having many apartment buildings. As such, 7 am and 7pm are prime times for peeing and pooing! As a result, one is careful when walking on the pavements🙀

Another feature has been the friendliness of the locals. Twice today, strangers stepped in to assist with our communications with people who had little English. I did manage to give a little back today when a woman with a white cane stopped me in the street and made it clear she wanted to know the name of the next cross street which I was able to tell her 😊.
