• Rome, Vatican City

    May 8 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

We had our first sleep in today. Didn’t get up until after 8am, and didn’t leave the apartment until nearly 10am! We walked to the Coloseum, walked around the outside, then started our way back, deliberately getting lost in the streets of Rome. Every corner there seemed to be something interesting. A monument, a fountain, an ancient building. Unfortunately for us we started our holiday in Egypt. Nothing we’ve seen since had compared. Rome would have blown us away if we hadn’t seen Egypt first. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still impressive, but I feel like we’ve used up all our “WOW’s”. We ended up back at our apartment and got changed to go to the Vatican museum’s. It was close to an hours walk. Our time slot was for 5pm and we went in at exactly 5pm, so that was great. No one waiting inside at security, we walked straight through. I’ve heard you can wait hours in peak season. Plenty of people inside, but not packed and it flowed nicely. We went through faster than some as we’re not into history or museums. I wasn’t even going to visit the Vatican, but I thought I might have regretted it if I didn’t. It’s took us 1.5 hours to get through the whole thing. It’s massive!!! I was looking forward to seeing the Cistine Chapel, but it fell short of my expectations. It was quite noisy in there considering people weren’t allowed to speak. It was just another room with paintings all over the walls and ceiling, like most other rooms in the museum’s. Our tickets included happy hour in the acorn garden inside the Vatican. We got a lot more than I expected, as I didn’t pay much for the tickets on the Vatican website. I reckon we covered well over 10 km’s today.Read more
