Mona Lisa by Da Vinci - it's actually quite small. The painting is 30 in × 21 in and since it was stolen before (in 1911), they don't let you get very close. It's actually hard to see it in person.

Nearby plaque reads: The subject of this painting - the Archangel Saint Michael vanquishing Satan - was intended to flatter the Order of Saint Michael. The existence of this order, whose Grand Master was King François I, guaranteed the alliance between France and the Vatican, reestablished in 1518 to combat the Turks.

I didn't get a nearby plaque description, but we actually watched some videos on artwork in the Louvre before we went and this quickly became one I was most excited to see. This statue was discovered on the Greek island of Samothrace. It has been dated to 190 BCE. It is believed to have been on the mounted bow of a ship. We don't know what ship or who the author was. The two most amazing things about it are the wings and the stomach. To think those wings could withstand violent seas and not break off is astounding. If you walk around back, the wings are supported by some kind of metal brace, but it's still impressive. The look of the fabric of a thin wet dress looks as though a woman actually on the front of a ship. To create that from marble is amazing!
