• Mystras

    August 18 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

While we were in Petalidi a couple of weeks ago, we had a hire car and NIck, Lou, Ziggy and us drove into the mountains to the visit the Archaeological site of Mystras. It was huge and with the temperature in the high 30's we didnt manage the whole site. It is so big that there are two entrances and you drive from one ot the other.
The site which dates back to 1294 was a village around a monastry as the local leaders decided monks did not need ot be distracted by city life, so stuck them at he top of an enormoius hill and gave them umpteen churches to look after. The castle was closed due to fire risk and the monastry was being restored and therefore not accessible, but the rest was definitely worth a visit.
We were very pleased to find the taverna nearby for refreshments after to.
