  • Seattle - Day 1

    Seattle so far including the Pike Market with its quirky art work like Golden Girls/Kiss mashup and the wall of gum (yes chewy), Downtown statues, our hipster hotel, a spectacular meal featuring Northwestern classics such as cedar plank salmon (cooked on a cedar board) at the stunning Six Seven restaurant on the water and the incredible views of the city at night from the famous Space Needle, followed by the monorail back to the hotel.Read more

  • Seattle - Day 2

    Today we made the most of Seattle’s Pacific Northwest landscape by riding e-bikes up to Ballard then headed over to the hip Fremont for lunch and to check out the Fremont Troll (one of its many street works). We then went on an underground tour beneath Pioneer Square (the US’s first historic district). After the great Seattle Fire of 1889 they rebuilt the city above street level creating an underground of about 30 blocks that became the largest illegal trade (eg moonshine and red light etc) in the states. It’s now mostly unused except for this tour!Read more

  • Seattle - Day 3 (Mt Rainier & Falls)

    Today we decided to hire a car and explore outside Seattle. We went to the absolutely breathtaking Mt Rainier and Snoqualmie Falls. The Pacific Northwest is a stunning part of the world.

  • Seattle - Day 3 (Chihuly Glass)

    As if Mt Rainier and the Snoqualmie Falls weren’t enough spectacle for one day, we then went to Chihuly Garden and Glass to see the stunning blown glass works by Dale Chihuly. Seattle claims to have more glassblowing shops than anywhere else in the world outside of Murano Island, the district in Venice, Italy, where Murano glass originated.Read more

  • Chicago - Day 1

    First day in Chicago has been brilliant, including Skydeck at Willis Building, the Magnificent Mile, River Walk and the Gold Coast (man made beach on Lake Michigan). A wonderful city with incredible architecture, wide streets and fascinating history (see next post on Chicago History Museum).Read more

  • Chicago - Day 2

    Today we drove around Chicago suburbs and surrounds, soaking up the mid west vibes. We started in BoysTown (Northalsted) the first officially recognised GayBourhood in the US then explored further north in historic suburbs like Bryn Mawr up towards Milwaukee (Laverne and Shirley). After that, we hit the outlets, drove around and ate Cinnabons like real Americans. Our last stop was Bronzeville, deeply rooted in African-American history, including to visit Louis Armstrong’s house. Last, but not least, we caught a drag show at Lips Theatre (seperate post).Read more

  • Boston - Day 1

    Arrived early avo and walked over to Cambridge, the home of Harvard, to take in its beautiful buildings and Art Gallery. We then head into the historic North End of Boston and visited the Old North Church, Paul Revere’s house (an important figure in American history) and had dinner at Mamma Maria’s and pastries from Mike’s Bakery. The North End is also the Italian district.Read more

    Today we did an amazing walking tour of Boston. We learnt a lot about its history and saw a ton of amazing buildings and beautiful streetscapes. We then caught up with the lovely Jennine and Allan who live in Boston. Jennine and I worked together in Japan 20 years and caught got the first time since today! Looking forward to catching up further on tomorrow’s trip to Salem - pics to come!Read more

    Today our fabulous Boston friends Jennine and Allan took us to Salem, the home of the witch trials in the late 1600s. We did a very informative walking tour and visited the Salem Witch Museum and Witch Board/Oija Museum.Read more

  • NYC - Day 1

    Start spreading the news! We have finally arrived in the city that never sleeps. Got in around midday and staying in the Battery Park area so have just seen a few of the sites around the financial district (FiDi) including Ground Zero, Wall Street and Battery Park. For dinner we landed at O’Hara‘s Irish Pub opposite Ground Zero where they commemorate the fallen with patches on the walls. Really popular and happening little place..Read more

    Today we did a walking tour to cover off the main tourist attractions including Central Park, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Times Square and the Statue of Liberty. Later in the day we visited friends in Chelsea and saw some more sites on the way including the Empire State Building and Central Station.Read more

    We started the day by heading across the Brooklyn Bridge and exploring some different parts of Brooklyn and Queens. We then headed back to Manhattan and explored Central Park, went to the top of 30 Rock for the amazing skyline views then caught Wicked on Broadway - amazing!Read more

  • NYC - Day 5

    Today we explored the East, West and Greenwich Village areas including the Tenement Museum (showing life in the 1950s and 60s for two immigrant families in the 103 Orchard Street Tenement) and the Merchant House Museum (capturing how a wealthy merchant family lived in the late 1800s). We also had lunch at Russ and Daughters in the East Village (a traditional Jewish deli) and walked a bit of the Highline in Chelsea (a disused rail track turned into a walking path). Near there we also saw the ‘Mt Rushmore of Art’ mural.Read more

    Today we went uptown to Harlem to see a gospel service and then ate soul food at the famous Sylvia’s. We then visited the incredible Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) and went to another Broadway show. This time we saw an interactive show set in a nightclub type setting called ‘Here lies love’ about the life of Imelda Marcos. It had an all Filipino cast and the music was by Dave Byrne from Talking Heads and Fat Boy Slim. The concept was really original. We were part of the ‘night club participants’ on the floor and we enjoyed it.Read more

  • NYC - Day 7

    Today we went to the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and saw some more amazing and famous art works including Dali, Picasso, Kahlo, Matisse and Warhol. We then went to the upper west side to have lunch at Barney Greengrass, another classic Jewish deli. We had more of the delicacies today, including Gefilte fish (like a tasty fish meatloaf) and a pastrami and sliced tongue sandwich. Absolutely delicious! We then went back into Central Park to see the famous and beautiful Bethesda Fountain and Terrace and checked out the M&M store in Times Square. We then had dinner with our fabulous friend Paul at the Cook Shop in Chelsea.Read more

    Today was our last full day in NYC, so we made our way through a ton of little neighbourhoods from the very west side of Manhattan on the Houston River right across to the east side. We started at Little Island (nicknamed the champagne glasses) then went through neighbourhoods including the Meatpacking District, Soho, Noho, Nolita, Little Italy, Chinatown, Tribeca, East Village, Ukrainian Village and ending at Alphabet City! Then, for our final evening, we caught another Broadway show - Chicago! It is one of our favourite shows and it did not disappoint. We then went back to our favourite NY Diner Juniors!Read more

    Our first museum today was the air and space Museum. Really interesting to see the original first plane designs by the Wright brothers, the first commercial plane, Evil Knievel‘s original Harley Davidson and awesome space memorabilia including Neil Armstrong ‘s first space suit.Read more
