    Oban, Stewart Island

    Bit cool today but relatively good crossing for Fouveaux Strait. Took the bikes across for transport -rode over to Lee Bay for the photo of the anchor chain coming up on Stewart Island - about 5km each way. When we got back from there it was off to the South Seas Hotel for a lunch of blue cod and a drink. After that it was back on the bikes to go around to Harrolds Bay and Acker Point to see the stone cottage. It was built in 1834 and Capt. Acker who built it used to build boats there. The cottage housed Acker, his wife and nine children!
    Bit boisterous coming back across the Strait but nothing terrible. A day we'll remember.    Læs mere

    Dunedin - Larnachs Castle

    There's a huge sea fog up here today. Could hardly see driving up here. That meant we didn't get the views (which are normally spectacular) nor did we spend as much time in the gardens as they deserve. The castle is worth the visit alone. Good storyboards about the Larnachs and the families that have owned the house since. Lots of sad stories (wouldn't give you anything for William Larnachs children), and the story of the Barker family who bought it as a ruin in 1967 and lived in it as they restored it around themselves. They still own it today, 55 years later. There are still a few rooms to be restored but more of the house is open to the public than I've seen before and the work that has been done has been done well.
    Either the castle or the garden would be worth the visit on their own.
    Just as we were about to leave the fog lifted so we went back and spent more time in the gardens and got some better photos of the castle. The drive back into town had views for miles out to sea and along the peninsula. Magic.    Læs mere

    Dunedin - Olveston House

    It was built in the early 1900's for a Jewish family, the Theomins, who made their money importing pianos. They had a son and a daughter- the son married late and died without children and the daughter, Dorothy, never married. When she died in 1966 she left the house to the city. They didn't really want it! A group of her friends maintained it in the early years and now it has 14000 visitors a year.
    Dunedin has many historic buildings - some open to the public and many just lived in or turned into student flats.    Læs mere

    Central Otago

    Left Dunedin in the rain to see the Moeraki Boulders at low tide. Had breakfast in the DOC carpark there after washing off some of the muck obtained taking a tumble trying to get close to the boulder still stuck in the bank. After that it was backtrack to Palmerston and up into Central Otago again. The photos are of the Oturehua Store - oldest continously trading store in NZ, Ophir and the Ophir Bridge and Vallance cottage in Alexandra.
    We're staying just north of Alex tonight ready to ride the Dunstan Trail tomorrow.    Læs mere

    Dunstan Trail

    BIG day - the planned ride on the Dunstan Trail. We've moved our booking twice and I think we confused them. We were supposed to leave from the Heritage Precinct in Cromwell but they took us to Smiths Way - that's an extra 16km to ride. It was cool but fine and not too windy. There were quite a few people doing it too. It's not a rail trail - you need to be confident on narrow trails with no outside barrier in places and a long way to fall if you go over the edge. Parts of it were really steep too - Cairnmuir Ladder goes from the coffee boat at lake level up a vertical 324m by winding up a steep rock face.No photos of that - Karin had given the order to just go until we got to the top. She didn't want to meet anyone coming the other way. Have a look on YouTube- there are good videos of the trail on there.
    We arrived in Clyde after 58km both feeling pretty fresh after just under 4 hours. Just as well really - the Alexandra pool closed at 5 pm tonight so no spa for us tonight. Great ride!    Læs mere

    Otago Rail Trail

    After the epic ride on the Dunstan Trail yesterday we had a more relaxed day on the Otago Rail Trail today. We drove out to Lauder Station and cycled from there through the Poolburn Gorge to Hayes Engineering at Oturehua. We had a very relaxed lunch there then spent an hour or so looking around the engineering works and the family homestead. Ernest Hayes was a clever guy - lots of the stuff we were looking at that he designed and made in the 1900's are still in use on farms today. Fence strainers were his big thing - I don't know a farm anywhere that doesn't use his tensioning tool and the permanent strainer that he designed in 1924.
    The whole ride was 46km and brings our two day total to over 100km. We enjoyed our swim and spa afterwards at the local pool. Easy day tomorrow - cruising in the motorhome up into the McKenzie country.    Læs mere

    Tekapo

    Definitely a lazy day. Drove up from Alexandra over the Lindis Pass into the McKenzie basin to Lake Pukaki then on to Tekapo. We're staying at the NZMCA Park in Tekapo. It's right on the lake and surrounded by trees. As you can imagine it's pretty full. We got about 1.30pm and were lucky to get a spot.
    As you can see, we've taken the tourist photos of Mt.Cook across Lake Pukaki, the monument to the collie sheep dog and the Church of the Good Shepherd. When I was last here the church was left open and you could take the classic shot across Lake Tekapo through the altar window. You can't anymore.
    We were going to slip into the lake for a swim but Karin found it a bit nippy so we slipped into a glass of wine instead!
    Karin's keen to come back next year to cycle the Alps To Ocean trail. It starts at Mt.Cook or Tekapo and finishes at Oamaru. Planning starts as soon as we get home.    Læs mere

    Christchurch, Lyttleton, Akaroa

    Yesterday was a travel day getting from Tekapo to Christchurch so not many photos to show. Beautiful views of the McKenzie Country and then the Rakaia River Gorge. As soon as we arrived in Christchurch we marked our spot for the night and headed through the Lyttleton tunnel to see the port. There's a view of that looking down over the container terminal out to sea. We watched the cranes for a while and on our way back we saw the signs to go and see the Timeball Station (google it - quite interesting) . Anyway, Mark decided to head up there...they might have warned us the road wasn't suitable for campers! The street got very narrow to the point that Karin had to get out and make sure I wasn't going to touch either the fence or the car parked on the other side of the road. There was no way out so we just kept going till we reached the end of the street.
    Today we spent the day out at Akaroa - the little French settlement out on Banks Peninsula. The Harbour is a flooded volcanic cone and the settlement was an early attempt by the French to get established in NZ. Lovely place - like Russell in Northland but French rather than English.
    Off to Kaikoura tomorrow. Time is running out and we want to see a few more things before we go home.    Læs mere

    Kaikoura

    Drove through from Christchurch to the clubs park at Kaikoura this morning. I don't know what it is but everytime it's my turn to drive out come the stop/go guys and the traffic lights! The drive is interesting - lots of changes since the earthquake. You can see where the land has been lifted up by the colour of the exposed rock.We got the bikes off this afternoon and after I'd changed the rear tube on Karins bike we went out exploring Kaikoura along their cycleway. Great thing to do - we've seen a pod of maybe 50 dolphins leaping about just offshore and several seals sunning themselves on the rocks.
    Next time we come this way it will be to stay for a few days. Beautiful NZMCA Park too.    Læs mere

    Travelled from Kaikoura to Blenheim on Saturday morning. We spent the morning on a walk through Pollard Park by the golf course and the afternoon in the pools at the aquatic centre. Spent last night at Koromiko - its a private spot ($5 per van per night) and maybe 15 minutes from the ferry.
    Had a wander around the waterfront at Picton this morning and did a bit of cleaning inside the motorhome while waiting in line for the ferry. The old girl needs a big wash outside but she'll get that tomorrow. We've just boarded the ferry a few minutes ago.
    Can't wait to come back - so many places to go and things yet to do.    Læs mere
