Fox Glacier

Took a helicopter flight up the glacier - well worth it. Karins first flight in a chopper. Pilot says they've lost 100m off the glacier per year for the last ten years, the road has washed away and won't be replaced, and we saw the walking track where people used to step off the track onto the ice. It's about a kilometer back from the ice now.Læs mere

The photo everyone takes by the tree in the lake, but notice how low the water is. The tree is normally in the lake. Just getting some light drizzle now - it's supposed to pour on the West Coast. Heading to the NZMCA Park at Lowburn as a base for the next few days. Due to be in Manapouri on Sunday night.Læs mere

Part of the town was flooded to make Lake Dunstan when the Clyde Dam was opened. Lots of locals were moved and the town centre was demolished to prevent debris going into the turbines. Before this all happened locals got together and moved some of the old buildings to higher ground. Two bridges are under the lake -one where the photos were taken and another complete with a car on it roughly where we're staying. The weather is very warm, even the wind, and there hasn't been much rain. Had a soak in their lovely spa pools this afternoon. Will use Lowburn as a base for the next three days. Karins tailbone is slowly healing - still hope to do the Dunstan trail together next week.Læs mere

Not many photos today - pretty wet outside. Will get more on our way back through when we do the Dunstan Trail. Clyde is old and many of the buildings are original stone and timber. Came through to Alexandra for a drive - that's the two bridges side by side. Alex is the town on the weather forecasts with the very hot and very cold temperatures. Yesterday we did our housework! Vacuum and clean then off to the laundromat. Spent the afternoon in the heritage precinct and then off to the pools and spa. The weather is supposed to improve overnight - I hope so because we're booked for the bbq cruise on the Earnslaw in Queenstown. Going out for dinner tonight.Læs mere

Arrowtown

Early start with a drive through the Kawerau Gorge to Arrowtown. Most of the buildings are old - 1860's or so - and even where new buildings are added they're built of the same materials and look the same as the old. The row of little cottages in the tree lined street are often painted by artists in the yellow leaves of autumn.
The little houses are restored miners buildings in Chinatown where 16 - 20 shacks formed a small village. The best of them were actually quite warm inside and would have been cosy with the fire lit.Læs mere

Lunch cruise on the Earnslaw. We nursed Clive Barrett - he was once skipper of this ship. The weather came out beautiful just as we set sail.
Lunch was supposed to be a BBQ but was way better than any barbie I've had before. The buildings at Walter Peak are well preserved - we had a bit of a wander around. I've been on the Earnslaw before but this was such a great day. If you get the chance, do it.Læs mere

Te Anau & Milford Sound

Drove from Queenstown after our Earnslaw trip and a look around town. Arrived about 7pm but didn't feel like dinner after our lunch. Nice NZMCA Park but very full - we were lucky to get a spot.
We were just going to have a quiet day today but got inspired by the photographs of Milford when we went to the supermarket. So we packed ourselves off out to Milford Sound - two hours drive each way. What a stunning journey and somewhere neither of us has been before.
When we got back we drove to Manapouri. Karin brought the motorhome back to Te Anau and Mark cycled the 29km of the Lake2lake trail as a workout in 1 hour 15 minutes. Very steep in places, follows the lakes and the river through beech forest, along high shelves above the river and hard slogs up and down gravel trails.

Manapouri & Doubtful Sound

Big day out - boat across Manapouri, bus over the Wilmot Pass to Deep Cove then another boat out to the Tasman Sea along Doubtful Sound.
Last time I did this trip they took you down the 2km road under the mountain into the power station but Meridian don't allow that anymore. Saw seals at the end of the sound - young pups just a month or so old. Mum obviously out hunting.
Coming back a tractor pulling a big boat over the pass had blown its engine. Just barely enough room to get the bus pass on the narrow gravel road. Karin was less than impressed with the bus ride but loved the boats. Real Journeys have great staff - very impressed.Læs mere

Bluff

We're in Bluff today before going to Stewart Island tomorrow. The ship's wheelhouse is the sign in shed at the Invercargill NZMCA Park where we are staying. Notice the two signs - the first was taken just now at the Bluff end of SH1 - the other was taken at Cape Reinga when we were there in 2020. They read different distances - 49km out! The boat coming in past the Bluff light is the ferry we'll take tomorrow. The chain sculpture represents the anchor chain as Stewart Island is supposed to be the anchor of the South Island (Mauis' canoe). If we're lucky, we'll get a picture of the chain emerging from the sea at Lee Bay on Stewart Island tomorrow.
Late in the afternoon we did the Greenpoint walk to the ship's graveyard and found a good spa pool at the aquatic centre to finish our day.Læs mere
