Night Crossing

Who would have thought it would be hard to get a feed in Porirua at 6 o'clock on a Friday night! The food court in the Plaza was closed so we couldn't get a salad. Chips it was then!
We've tried something different this trip and booked a cabin. We've had a good three hours sleep (despite a sometimes lumpy and noisy crossing).
We'll be off the ship shortly and off to St.Arnaud. We're feeling quite refreshed.Read more

St.Arnaud

Arrived at St.Arnaud about 1.30a.m. We slept cozy but it got down to about -4 degrees outside overnight. Spent all day at Kerr Bay on Lake Rotoiti. We walked the 7km track around Brunner Peninsular to West Arm and back then after a late lunch visited the Classic Boat Collection right here where we're staying. It's been very pleasant in the sun all day and it's predicted to stay like this. Lazy evening tonight then back to the lake tomorrow.Read more

Lake Rotoiti

Spent the day at the lake sharing stories and places to stay with the tourists. Cold overnight again here but we have a cozy bed and good heater so no issue. Through the warmest few hours of the day we paddled about half way along the lake so we could see the other end. If it was summer we would have gone the whole length but we're a bit more cautious this time of year. Yesterday we saw these sea scouts go to a hut at the end of the lake and saw then come back today. No adults in the cutter (two in a chase boat) and the kids managing everything themselves. Quite impressed with their skills.
Moving on to bike the Spooners tunnel section of the Great Taste Trail tomorrow then on to Nelson.Read more

Great Taste Trail - Spooners Tunnel

Once it warmed up a bit this morning we left St Arnaud for Nelson. The autumn colors were spectacular - it was a shame there wasn't a better spot to stop and get a better picture. We parked in Wakefield for a few hours to ride the Spooners Tunnel section of the Great Taste Trail. Because of the way we were doing it, it was 20km steadily uphill to the end of the tunnel with the last 4km being quite tiring. The pay off was a quick 20km trip back to the van.
We're at the Nelson Speedway for the next two nights then will probably go through to Motueka and Kaiteriteri after that. It's a great break so far.Read more

Lazy Day in Nelson

We had a bit of a lazy day today. Once we got ourselves organized we headed into Richmond to check out the mall (half an hour - neither of us are shoppers!) and pick up a few groceries. After that it was off to Tahunanui Beach for the rest of the day for a walk then lie about reading in the sunshine. We finished our day with a spa at the Aquatic Centre then back to the speedway for the night.Read more

Nelson City & Founders Park

We spent the morning wandering around the city centre. The cathedral is ok but you can see they ran out of money building it. The drawings of how it was supposed to be are stunning.
Founders Park was great - probably because we remember lots of the things we saw! The Bristol Freighter was a highlight - so were the Newman's busses. They even had an advert playing we remembered from childhood. We're in Motueka tonight hoping to get out and about tomorrow.Read more

Kaiteriteri

We're at the NZMCA Park at Motueka. Today we rode our bikes around to Kaiteriteri and back then stopped at the old Motueka Port to see the wreck of the Janie Seddon. The Janie Seddon was a NZ submarine hunter ship that served in both world wars and supposedly fired the first shots from a navy vessel in WW2. The ride was about 20km each way beside country roads and through tight grade 3 bush trail to reach Kaiteriteri. It's been swished up heaps since I was last here but is still a beautiful spot. Tomorrow we're booked on the water taxi going up to Totaranui and back in the Abel Tasman National Park. Should be another good day.Read more
TravelerLooks like you had a full on day. That old submarine reminds me of the Hyderabad that once was between Waitarere & Hokio Beach. Sounds like another great day tomorrow for sure. Hope the weather is being kind 🙏

Abel Tasman National Park

Took the sea shuttle trip from Kaiteriteri to Totaranui this afternoon. The shuttle drops off and picks up trampers at various points along the way. The skipper knows the area well and gave a running commentary about what we were looking at. We recommend you do this if you're down this way.Read more

Motueka to Blenheim

Today was about travel. It's just over two hours from Motueka to Blenheim but we did a bit of sightseeing along the way.
We started with breakfast at Port Motueka then out to visit the RV shop Moutere Caravans. The corten steel sculpture is at the vineyard next door. Next stop was at Pelorus Bridge DOC Camp to have a look around, then on to Havelock then on to Waterlea Racecourse on Blenheim. The autumn scenes are from Pollard Park just across the golf course from where we're staying.
Tomorrow we catch the ferry at 2 pm to come home. We're planning another 4 day weekend in about a month - cycling in Napier probably - but for now it's back to work on Monday.Read more
