    Claytor Lake CG, VA

    June 1, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 77 °F

This state park was easy to access and was only a few miles off of route 81. The site was also very level and has lots of shade. We like state parks because they are a good balance of reasonable prices and nice amenities with usually very nice quiet. We are enjoying both water and electric hookup.
Despite packing up and closing the house was a lot of work, I took a few minutes to bring along some nice smelling flowers. We have quite a team of people helping us out while we are gone.

The worst part of the day was forgetting to bring a loaf of bread for making our sandwiches for lunch 😂. Breadless sandwich was healthier. Lol.

Added this note at the end of the trip:
It is completely different to live on the road for months, than to go on a 3 week trip.

At this campground, looking out the bedroom window, the stream is about 10 ft away so you get to hear the stream while you're going to sleep. Loving it, You have to book these stream-side sites 6 months ahead. The whole CG was full.

The mill was interesting. Mingus Mill is a steel turbine-powered grist mill from around 1900.

    June 3, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

The skywalk was a fun thing to do with the longest suspension bridge, but we like the Snowbird ski slope lift in salt lake City a lot better. It's extremely touristy in this area, like Ocean City boardwalk.

Clingman's Dome is worth the drive up here. It's just hard to find parking, so go early.

You never know what's going to happen on vacation, a bunch of pink carnations came floating down the stream and several of them came over to the side we were on. So I picked them and put them in a vase.

$17 a night and all sites are full hook-up. We are by the stream. Good shade. Close to town. We get cell service.. Really tight squeeze getting into site because National Park Service doesn't want to cut or trim anything. Eddie got it in. Glad we had reservations because the whole CG is full.. The Host told us they are pretty much full every night of the season because this is the only urban national park
We are going to the hot springs this week.  From the 1920s through the 1940s, Hot Springs flourished as a place where the famous and infamous came to enjoy the thermal waters, In 1832 it became the first National Park. The National Park consists of a row of Bath Houses – 2 are still working and the other buildings have been transformed into gift shops, the visitor center, and a brewery!! It looks like the town had it's glory days, and now those days are past, outside of town. Downtown is like downtown Harrisburg

We took a bike ride around a little bit of the lake this morning while it was cool and the wildflowers were everywhere. It was nice seeing the lake and the flowers. I stopped to get a picture of a few of them, but missed some. Saw a family of deer.Read more

Hey, it was 99°, so we decided to go KOA tonight. Not impressed with this campground.

Hiking at 12,000 feet elevation near Cloudcroft. NM.
Alpine type area, one of my favorites.
We sat on a log for lunch.
The road here was quite narrow, so lots of pulling over.

  • Dog Canyon Trail, beside campground NM

    June 12, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

The bench we sat on was 4022 feet up, and we probably hiked up another 2000 feet, 2 miles of trail. The mile markers were in 1/4 mile increments since it was so steep and sometimes it was hard to figure out which rocks were the trail. It's hard to see in the photos the cliffs and the steep grade. There were times when my comfort level was just about maxed out when the trail was on the cliff edge. Of course the views were awesome. I marked our trailer in one of the photos. And where we hiked to on one.
    One of Eddie's favorites

Saw lava field on the way.

$7.50 a night to camp above the lake with electric and water hook up. So quiet here, only 6 campers counting us. It was totally quiet at the last site, but even more quiet here.
We heard coyotes carrying on in the middle of the night. and saw one prancing through our site this morning. We watched a crane catch a pink/orange fish.
We are in the middle of nowhere.

  • Mesa Verde. CO

Coldest night so far. We are guessing low 30s. The whole drive here was scenic, but the drive up Rt. 191 was exceptionally scenic, and very bumpy riding a trailer.
