    We are going to Jamaica

    February 27, 2024 in Jamaica ⋅ 🌙 25 °C

3am early wake up. Going premium meant we breezed thru check in and things went so well we had a 45 minute wait for the lounge.
Premium seats were great and food and drink was plentiful and good. Will be hard going back to economy!
Had a crazy coach ride to Port with a police escort, he was pushing other drivers our of way, running thru red lights, crazy.
Boat is just how we remembered it less than a year ago.
Will be in port royal tomorrow, it was called the most wicked place in the world in 17th century.

  • Pirate land - Port Royal

    February 28, 2024 in Jamaica ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Long sleep needed last night. Late morning departure to have a walk around Port Royal, after 2 double myers rum apiece!
Got ship tender to Port Royal and did a couple of slow hours walking around in over 30c heat, it could be really nice old authentic place but it's a bit of a shit hole, rubbish everywhere. 8 dollars for 2 small tins of beer, no thanks.
Back to boat now for a few free rums.

  • 1st day at sea on way to Cartagena

    February 28, 2024 in Jamaica ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Lazy lazy day on boat on our way to Cartagena. Am looking forward to seeing this place, our kind of place.
3rd day of looking for 'flor de cana' rum, none on board this year! Myers rum is a close second.
Whole day has been a bit of a rough sail, boat rolling around and everyone doing drunk walk impressions, really nice to sleep to in the afternoon.

  • Cartagena

    March 1, 2024 in Colombia ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Did our own walking tour of Cartagena old town and Getsemani neighbourhood. We shared taxi with another couple and agreed to do a little tour on return. Taxi driver insisted in picking us up 3 hours later and took o money until trip was finished, never experienced taxi driver not taking the outbound fare. We really enjoyed this place, it would have been good to stay longer. I think it will be hard to beat.Read more

  • Panama canal

    March 2, 2024 in Panama ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Long day trip from Colon (Atlantic) to Panama city (Pacific) by coach then boat and fast coach back. 8 hours for 100 miles, 1st 50 in 7 hours.
It's impressive but slow and we had to do it. Expensive tour and we got this for lunch!
Tomorrow is Costa Rica and a longer day tour.

  • Puerto Limon - Costa Rica

    March 3, 2024 in Costa Rica ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Veragua rain forest this morning. Original wilderness that covers entire Eastern seaboard of Costa Rica. Educated-out again. Highlight was getting conned into the flat route to see a waterfall that involved 115 steps down then 115 steps up in 30c heat. Guide had made a mistake. Several people in our group were nearly killed! An experience and the waterfall was not that good.
Afternoon was a boating trip on Tortuguera canal (ally & Craig, it was a cheap cheap version of xochimilco), saw a few birds, sloths (bags of grey in trees) and a cayman deep in the mangrove (I'm convinced it was a log).
Its a beautiful country, so verdant.
Mam at top of steps missing out the last 30. Spot the lizard in the tree.
Full day at sea tomorrow on our way back to montego bay.

  • Montego Bay Reggae hotel

    March 5, 2024 in Jamaica ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Cruise finished and now at Riu Reggae hotel just east of the airport, we are directly under the flight path as pic shows.
Good clean big hotel on beach, food and drink good so far.
Jamaica is very very expensive. Some of the day trips are $150 plus each but we knew that before we left.
This week was the relax week so no worries. Apart from the continuous loud reggae/pop.
Ps... never seen so many huge black arses with tiny thongs! Not a pleasant sight.

Each Day at hotel is fairly similar. Very hot, lots of good food, loads to drink (maybe too much), pool, rest, read, repeat.
You can't really go anywhere, your not advised to walk too far except across main road to a couple of shopping malls.Read more

  • Saturday

    March 9, 2024 in Jamaica ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Today we went out on a long long tour, off out at 7am missed breakfast but we had Jamaican Patties included in tour and back at 7pm Jamaican roads are the worst in the world and we have had a terrible drive. All our safari drives have been far more comfortable.
1st stop was to the Appleton rum distillery after 3 hours drive - very good, ate sigar cane (nice have some you all), sugar cane juice (not so nice), mollasses (nice) and finally rum tasting. 2nd stop to YS falls after 30mins drive - very good, 3rd at pelican Island after 1 hour drive - unique tourist trap.
A long expensive trip, but best value and we saw a lot, now off to see chiropractor to fix my back!

  • Mothers Day Chillin

    March 10, 2024 in Jamaica ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We are both "Mothers Day Chillin". A lot of chillin and a steakhouse meal.
V2 picture shows a hotel security man watching the trade from a kayak to make sure the tourist is not cheated.
Picture of girls is a frequent albeit sad sight here, too much Instagram etc!!!
    Steak house was a disappointment.
Saw an excellent steel drum band. They were great.

  • Last full day & signing off

    March 11, 2024 in Jamaica ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Bit of shopping this morning. Got Monte Cristo No3 cigars at £6 vs £32 at home!!!
It was too hot to walk barefoot from beach to bar today! But another enjoyable resting day on sand and in the sea.

    Overall another good holiday,,,
Best place - Cartagena & Getsemani
Best entertainment - silver birds Steel band
Best food - vista Italian on ship
Best activity - being in sea
Biggest let down - Panama canal, it was under whelming
Biggest surprise - taxi driver not taking 1st payment in cartagena
Best luck - getting of explorer 2 before bug struck this week
Big hate - not being able to go anywhere safe in Jamaica without having to spend a fortune,I.e 3 mile return cab to montego bay centre is USD 40.
    Silent disco nite again.
