OK we have docked in Skagway the town of the gold rush in the 1800 to the early 1830 when gold ran out. Most building in town are reflection on that era and its stepping back in time.
The early pioneers had to trek either by boat and canoes or overland for over a 1,000miles to get here for the gold and they had to bring all their provisions with them as well. Most of them perished in the wild ,alk about hard slogging and trekking the wilds of Alaska.
The first pic is of the big landslide that happened 5yrs ago hitting a cruise ship in the dock and blocking the river for 3 weeks and ship and passengers had to wait for slide to be cleared before it could sail out and get passengers of and get repaired, they stopped all river traffic completely till they cleared the blockage.
The outside temp is 12c but wind is just above 6km hr and goes literally right through us.
Skagway is a town that solely relies on tourism to survive and in a few weeks will be a stop of point for up to 15 cruise ships and 20 motor coach tours that come here for the day.
First pics are of the dock and board walk to buses etc the rest are of the town and buildings, take note of snow plough and old Casey Jones locomotive that use to clear snow of the line up to 15years ago then got retired for a up to date locomotive train.
The other pics are the town and most of the pics are of buildings that have been here since the 1800.
The building in pic7 has the facades done in driftwood that has been collected from the river that has floated down from the upper reaches of the river fantastic architecture in the town.
